I'm struggling to install Win98 drivers for a sound card I have. I have tried the package from here: http://vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=2085&menustate=0 and from here: https://archive.org/details/sb16_pci.

In every single instance, I run the setup program - while the setup is running, the Add new hardware wizard pops up for PCI multimedia. The setup program by itself doesn't seem to put the driver files in the right place - I only have to search for a folder with an inf file in the Add Hardware wizard.

The problem is - whenever I manually point to the Win9XDrv folders that contain the drivers, the wizard tells me that those drivers aren't specifically written for the hardware (sound card) I'm using. So I'm assuming I'm using the wrong driver packages. The model no. of my card is CT4810 - its chip says CT5880-DBQ.

I've seen a bunch of google results and links for CT5880-DCQ, but haven't found anything for DBQ. What should I do? Any package that I can use specifically for my sound card? Pictures attached for your reference...

Hello, I went through similar pains for more than a week, searching high and low in Vogons and way way beyond, before finally settling on a set of packages that ended up being uploaded to the Vogons Library on the first link you mentioned. Did you read the description text on that link? Due to the Ensoniq - Creative product transition at the time it made these particular soundcards very hard to install nowadays without the original CDs. A lot of variations within the SB128PCI it seems, as you understood by now.

In my case I eventually found out the package that worked thanks to a description of the drivers with the actual filename, the link was dead but thanks to the filename I found it elsewhere. I also had to keep the extra ones that contained the Creative Sound Font Wave sets, which are missing from the actual original drivers. In my case, after the main drivers it asked for those extra EAPCI2M, EAPCI4M and EAPCI8M files that I had to also manually point it out to.

If in your case it's yet another variation within the 5880 chip line I still have a folder that has a few more packages that I removed from the upload at the time because they weren't relevant/working for me. Give it a shot if you like, who knows it might contain enough to actually complement yet another variation of the card:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/vhrbivxu1f1kg4 … 0_chip.zip/file

IIRC even with the original drivers I needed to pluck some stuff from other folders, and later it also asked for the missing sets. Might even install automatically in your case, but if it doesn't, try searching file by file in between packages. It really is that convoluted of a process with this card sometimes. Best of luck, happy new year!

Thank you so much! I will tinker around with it and update on this thread

So I have an update. I went through the entire folder and each of its subfolder. Tried out adding the driver manually through every inf file I could find. But none of them worked - I face either of two issues: either it says device not found/driver not working - I think this means that it's definitely the wrong inf file. The second issue I face is that Device Manager says there's a hardware conflict because of which the device doesn't work. The second issue is there for inf files that contain a trio of drivers - the Audio driver, legacy audio driver and some gameport thingy.

It's surprising that with just a slight change in the chip (CT5880-DCQ vs. CT5880-DBQ), the drivers don't work. Maybe I'm missing something that can resolve the hardware conflict..
