Skip S3 unless you want to load a tsr for full speed

Not all S3 cards are affected though and it's only 1Kb of memory which isn't crucial for any 486 system anyway.
BTW you won't even notice any performance drop unless you have powerful CPU like 5x86 150+ or Cyrix.

True... It is only after P-166 that I would ever recommend one of those two S3's over CL-5446.
Or, actually, I would never recommend it in a 5x86-133, because that is essentially a 486 with extra features.
As far as I remember, then an old user called Kanecvr, did some benchmarks.

What on earth happened to him? I read one rumor that he had a really bad accident.
I am not talking about his broken leg from that bike accident. I am talking about something REALLY bad.
I will not spread anything, as I have not seen anything explained, and I don't want to pass on any rumor's.
Just.... What happened to him??

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

Looks like he's been gone for almost 2 years. Hope he's OK.

I got a deal on a cheap Geforce4 MX 4000. Should arrive in a couple days. Fingers crossed that it works on the old boards.

It doesn't matter really. Unless your 486 build is something like that, any common S3 or Cirrus Logic card will do. TSR patch doesn't do much with 5x86-133Mhz CPU or lower.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

I got a cheap Jaton GeFORCE MX 4000 64MB (208PCI-64TWIN) video card that has a "single notch" PCI connector.

I don't get any video out when I put it in a FIC LEO 486 VIP motherboard, Via 82C486A / 82C505 chipset, Bios 4.15G. The computer still works and I can see the drive lights responding to my blind typing, but no picture in text mode or VGA mode. Booooo! Same as seveal other “two notch” cards.

However the card works in a Gateway BAT4IP3 motherboard with the 420EX (Aries) chipset - Bios 4.04.7. Yeah! The other two notch cards didnt work in this board.

Also the PCI bus on the 420EX chipset is benching significantly faster. The Matrix Mystique PCI that scores 12,000 chr/ms on the Via chipset gets 27,000 on the 420EX motherboard. Going to have to start testing like GLaDOS I guess.
