I got a Cirrus Logic 5440 Card with 1MB of RAM, that I'm using on my Windows 95 machine.
I can use 24-bit color, but only in 640x480. When setting the res to 800x600 it drops to 16-bit color.
I though that upgrading to 2MB will help, but it didn't.

What am I missing? is this card just not capable of 24-bit in "high" res?

I have no special "need" for 24-bit color.. just messing around with old hardware and trying to get the best out of it 😀

A 2MB card would be required for 24-bit color.

800x600x3 (bytes per pixel) = 1.44 MB of RAM

First of all, does it even see additional memory?

I think it does. I used NSSI and it showed 2MB.
But it is possible that my RAM chips were bad or didn't make good contact.
I ended up using another card (5446) and went through several RAM chips until I was able to to get them working.
Some caused glitches, some didn't get recognized and some caused the machine not to boot at all.
But eventually I got it working and I'm able to use 24-bit in 800x600.

I wouldn't bother with a 5440 in a retro build (except maybe a mid-range 486). Picked one up a month ago for fun, but it is pretty mediocre card. Put an extra meg onto it, and played around with it a bit, but wasn't impressed by the performance. Not even sure it's accelerator works in 24bit mode.

Basically, 5440 = 5430 (with a simple 32-bit accelerator) + video overlay features for video playback.

5446 is a much more advanced 64-bit accelerator.
