The issue here lies in limitations of technology. One master chip + 3 slave chips are hard to sync.

I wonder what the frame time microstutter looks like with 3-4 card SLI. 2 cards are already not great.

With 3x285s it can be terrible depending on the game but I just see it as the penalty for rendering across three separate GPUs.
The only real reason for even using such a setup today is for how damn cool it looks, its also a great talking point as even non PC people are amazed to see three GPUs in one machine.
