(my first post on Vogons)

I recently found a nearly identical 16Mb Geforce 256.
- Same brand (Guillemot)
- Same PCB layout, with no memory chips on the back.

I got the card a few weeks ago, but i just built the system needed to test it.
My card works, but it seems that the "blue" color is missing. Probably due to a bad/cracked solder joint.
Aside from the missing color, everything seems to work. I've tested WinXP up to 1920*1200 and ran UnrealTournament (UT99) in D3D Mode (XP default drivers).

After some online research, i found some mentions of a 3D Prophet SE 16MB :

I bought it from a local ad website. The previous owner listed it without any details ("3D Prophet" name + photo), so he had no details about the card either. I found the card by luck, recognizing the PCB layout on the picture.

This card looks like a lower cost version / entry level / OEM. With half of ram and underclocked components.
GPU@110Mhz and memory@143Mhz (instead of 120 and 166 for standard cards)
I also have a GPU Bios dump, but not sure if i can share it (copyright ?) or even how to preserve it ? (archive.org ?)
Edit : The bios is exactly the same as the one provided by the HansZ in this thread.

My test config :

  • PIII 700 s370
  • Asus CUBX-E
  • 256 Mb SDR (128Mb * 2)
  • SB Live! PCI sound card
  • Quantum Fireball 20Gb IDE HDD

As an extra question. My card obviously have a color problem. I strongly suspect a bad solder joint. No external damage. No PCB scratch.
I'm thinking about trying the oven trick (aka GPU baking). Do you have any advice about it ? (or about not to do it ?).

I would try tracing the blue pin on the VGA connector back to its source using a multimeter or preferably a scope . There may be a bad solder or a ripped passive component along the signal path .

Happy ending update

I made 2 other reflow attemps, this time soaking the chips pins with soldering flux.
And it's working perfectly now ! No artifacts. No missing colors.
So it took 4 oven baking to work again... and i think that it's 100% luck.
First at 180C° 11min, Second 200C° 12min, (Waiting 6+ month in a box) Third 190C° 11min with Flux, Fourth 200C° 11min with Flux.

This allowed me to test something i wanted to do for quite a long time.
Does Half-Life 2 can run on a 16Mb GeForce SDR.... and yes, it runs (So does Doom 3). But obviously with the lowest possible settings and DX7 mode.

In the same cooking batch, my Radeon X1950XTX also came back from the grave. So really good day.
(two other cards are still dead, Ti4600 and the HD 3870X2)

Edit : I also found more online reference to this card. Including benchmarks and retail prices.

  • Guillemot 3DProphet SE 16 Mo : 1190F (yes, it was before Euros. This is 181€ in 2000 Euros. And 241€ in 2021 Euros with inflation)
  • Guillemot 3DProphet SE 32 Mo : 1350F (205€ in 2000. 275€ in 2021)
  • Elsa ErasorX 32 Mo SDRAM : 1690F (257€ in 2000. 343€ in 2021)
  • Asus v6600 Deluxe 32 Mo SGRAM (SDR) : 2190F (333€ in 2000. 444€ in 2021)
  • Absolute GeForce Outrageous DDR (DDR SGRAM) : unknown price

This tends to prove that it's not an OEM only card. And the article also mentions A 32Mb GeForce256 LE. So more like a normal 256 but with slightly lower clock speeds.
To my surprise, there were also SGRAM (both SDR and DDR) versions.
I'm really tempted to update the Wikipedia article about GF256 as it does not mention these entry level versions. Only 32Mb SDR and 32/64 DDR versions...
