Hi,

I have a Voodoo1 card in my Pentium 233 MMX PC with Windows 98 SE, and with the current configuration, the Gamma setting has no effect. That means that all 3dfx games (e.g. Pod Racer or NFS 2 SE) are clearly too dark and since my CRT is already at max brightness and contrast, I rely on the card's gamma correction to get it to a reasonable brightness.

What is the recommended set of drivers for this card on Windows 98 SE? I don't remember which ones I installed at this point TBH, I grabbed something from the net when I got this card a while ago. So before I dig too deep, I'd like to know which set of drivers people had success with or if there's some idea someone has what would get gamma correction to work.

Thanks!

I use the latest official Voodoo1 reference drivers v3.01.00. With those, adjusting the gamma sliders in the 3DFX desktop properties menu automatically sets the relevant environment variables:

SET SST_RGAMMA=1.0
SET SST_GGAMMA=1.0
SET SST_BGAMMA=1.0

The gamma values can range from 0.4 to 1.9 so just pick the one that you're most comfortable with. Also, make sure that the "Apply Gamma to Glide" checkbox is ticked.

Thank you! I actually had that driver, but it still didn't work.

I found out why though: for whatever technical limitation of the Voodoo1, gamma correction has no effect when you run the card in 85 Hz. Once you set it to 60 Hz, gamma correction works as intended. Haven't tried 75 Hz yet, that might work as well.

EDIT - Looks like my refresh rate was actually set to 75 Hz.

I've tried it with NFS2SE (Glide) and NFS3 (Direct3D) so far. Pod Racer (Direct3D) was the same.
NFS2SE even has a built in brightness control that doesn't work in 85 Hz either.

After doing some more testing myself, I can confirm this. It seems that Voodoo1 gamma adjustments work fine at 60 Hz and 75 Hz. However, I can't get them to work at 85 Hz and 120 Hz.

I've edited my earlier post to reflect these findings.
