This little capacitor didn't make it. Hopefully the rest of the card is still good.

It's interesting that VideoLogic used capacitors on the Apocalypse 3Dx but Matrox didn't on the 3Dm. I wonder why.

Matrox did use capacitors. They were SMD tantalums

Today is REPAIR DAY!

Old capacitor removed.

Since I was working on the board already and the brand of capacitors was not recognizable, I decided to replace all of them at once.

The correct value for all of the capacitors is 47uF at 16V or better. The correct orientation for all capacitors on this card is the negative facing towards the PCI edge connector.

All done! But does it work?

Great to see a nice little repair to what I've always thought was an interesting card , nearly snagged an M3D on ebay the other day but I was a bit slow in getting a bid in and missed it , fool !!
Also I didn't really notice before how the ram chips are offset from the pads , that top pic is quite funny because of the angle , it makes it look like you've heated the board to start the repair and the ram chip has slid off , hah.
Sorry , there's something wrong with me but I thought it was funny. 😂

The reference design allowed for SGRAM or SDRAM but only the SDRAM variant was ever made.
