Oh windows Me allows the same system file tweaks for cache and larger memory support. as 98SE (for above 256mb ram)
I beleive what the 6600 is best for the pentium 4 socket 478 are the codename Prescott and yes it can run windows 7 64bit thus it oould run probably windows 10 64bit and linux that the platform is available in 8x AGP MODE although earlier pentium 4's on that platform are fine; anything single core socket 775 should have no issues with windows 9x (non pcie)
Prescott not optimal for 9x but greater with dual boot for a 64bit secondary OS on same computer and may be interesting to trial 9x in a hypervisor.
The cpu driver from xp x86 can be put in place of the cpu driver in 98se and millennium for better pentium 4 efficiency.
I haven't tried the pentium 3 one.

I tried this again on my 440BX but with a Tualatin with Windows XP. Both driver version 81.98 and 175.19 installed and recognized the card but attempting to run anything OpenGL or DirectX would just lock up the system.

I tried it on Windows ME again and the whole desktop was corrupted. I don't remember what combination of hardware I was using previously but it's not stable at all on this hardware.

ASUS P2B with Pentium 3 for SSE and driver version 175.19 with GeForce 6600 AGP.

Dawn is here to haunt your dreams.

Success! I managed to get it working with driver version 71.84 on Windows XP with a 440BX chipset.

A CPU with SSE such as Pentium 3 or better must be used for shader effects. For example, the FX Dawn demo will crash on an early Celeron without SSE and 3DMark2001 will show significant corruption like in the examples I provided at the start of this thread.

There are still some graphical glitches and corruption when running 3DMark2001 even with SSE. Older DirectX interfaces seem to work alright but seem to be slower than older cards with their accompanying older drivers.

Sounds like you have a bad card.

Run Video Memory Stress test from the Heron's boot cd set of utilities and see if the memory actually tests OK?

I have a 6600GT PCI which has a bit of bad memory I think. Probably should chuck it.

why won't that fairy turn around 🤣
memory test usually brings old memory back to life sometimes.

You've probably already eliminated this as it's basic, but did you ensure the clock speeds were correct? I've heard of folks buying old cards that had aggressive overclocks or other custom stuff done to them.

I consistently have issues with GeForce 3 and up with shader enabled games and other software in Windows 98 and older chipsets. There are always serious problems whenever SSE is missing as well.

The latest official driver 81.98 is always the worse. 71.84 is only the first one I encountered whole working backwards where Dawn would run properly.
