This is quite an interesting and reasonably rare external Nvidia graphics setup from the 2006 era!

Here are some pics of the Quadro Plex itself:

Here are the specs:

This was its original price:

This is the Nvidia Quadro Plex interface card which I have installed in my Alienware machine:

My Alienware Area51 7500 - Machine Specs:

* EVGA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard
* QX6850 @ 3.67GHz
* 8GB Patriot DDR2 @ 800MHz CL 4-4-4-12
* Quadro Plex 1000 Model IV (Dual Quadro FX 5600)
* Two Kingston 240GB A400 SATA 3 2.5" Internal SSD SA400S37/240G - HDD’s in RAID 0
* Fusion-io ioDrive2Duo 2.4TB MLC Flash SSD PCIe Accelerator Card

Here the inside of the system, with the interface card slotted:

Here are the Quadro Plex's GPUbench results:

Here's how GPU-Z sees the Quadro Plex 1000:

This is the 3DMark06 score:

Using MSI Afterburner, the system statistics show that this machine in it's current configuration with the Quadro Plex can do what two 8800 Ultras in SLI simply wouldn't have been able to do, as they'd be out of video memory!

I've built this system to demonstrate the performance of the Nvidia Quadro Plex 1000 Model IV running on period specific hardware. (This video just shows the setup.)

This video shows the system being benchmarked:

This is pretty wild. I've never even heard of these before.

It's indeed a largely forgotten piece of hardware!

BTW Has anyone tried to mod 8800GTX/Ultra to 1,5GB?

Quadro FX 5600 PCB has room for 24 memory chips. Regular 8800GTX would require chips with doubled density, with no guarantee that it could work after simple BIOS mod.

The Quadro FX 5600 has pretty much the same performance as an 8800GTX with 1.5GB of RAM.

Rather than attempting to modify 8800GTX's, it would make more sense to just purchase a pair of Quadro FX 5600's and slot them into your system in SLI mode!

I still have my original 8800GTX, which I purchased back in 2006: (Fitted with a Thermalright hr-03 Plus cooler)

Adding more RAM to 8800 Ultra could have some merit, because Nvidia used better binned A3 chips. A3 were used only on some late 8800GTS and 8800 Ultra.

You have a point although it is a risk!

It's ironic that they used better silicon on a consumer card (8800GTX Ultra) than their flagship workstation card!

Demand for better clocked silicon in professional market is lower. What matters most there is reliability and that's something regular G80 cards were infamously lacking.

But Quadro FX 5600 also can't do TripleSLI =P

The Quadro Plex 1000 could be setup in this way though!

The Quadro Plex can be configured as a single system or added to a visualization cluster for immense scalability.

SLI most likely don't work or work backwards.

You are indeed correct that SLI wasn't working:

I managed to get SLI up and running by forcing it in the driver:

Just look at that GPU memory usage!!!

I'll make another video with MSI Afterburner and Fraps running to take proper measurements!

Thanks for the input!!! 😀

Why Fraps? RivaTuner Statistics Server (comes with MSI AB) already has frame counter.

There's absolutely no performance increase when running it in an SLI mode!

I've always used Fraps!

I have the Afterburner statistics displayed in the top left of the screen and the FPS on the top right.

Just look at that GPU memory usage!!!

Some of that amount is reserved by OS GUI. By disabling Aero you can decrease memory load. Other than that, I think GZdoom does not use texture compression, unless specified, so it's Doom 3 Ultra quality scenario.

This video shows the actual performance of an Nvidia Quadro Plex 1000 Model IV when running the first two levels of Doom 1

Take note of the graphics memory usage! (Way beyond the scope of most GPU's from the 2006 era!!!)

This video shows Brutal Doom with most mods including the enhanced .wad file for Doom 1 Episode 1 running on an Alienware Area51 7500 machine from 2006 equipped with an Nvidia Quadro Plex 1000 Model IV.
