Finally got a hold of a Voodoo 5 but one of the fans was a little noisy (makes sense for something 20+ years old). Can't seem to find any new old stock of the original fans, so figured why not upgrade them instead 😉 Noctua 40mm 5V fans to the rescue!! Picked up some parts off digikey and a little cutting and soldering later have something even better then stock!

Incase anyone is interested these are the parts off Digikey

and

CONN SOCKET 28-32AWG CRIMP TIN

To be fair I don't think it takes much to be " better then stock" however your mod is very neatly done. long live the V5!

Thanks for this - I have the same mod in my near future. I have the card. I have the fans. I have the crimping tool. I have no confidence that I am not going to mess it up.

How did you attach the noctua fans to the heatsinks? I can't quite make it out in the pics.

I found another set of pics on overlockers: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/3df … ement.18885540/

That was my inspiration 😉 I didn’t have a special crimping tool, if you know of one let me know? I just used a little solder to hold the wire to the pins and used some needle nose pliers to clamp down on the wires. They are solid and well attached.

I found this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY3hbyF3ypA. The guy is fixing cooling fans on a projector, but the actual fittings are the same, I think.

He ends up recommending this crimping tool: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00YGLKBSK. And oh my god I bought that last June from Amazon, and I still have not done this mod yet. Model is IWISS SN-01BM.

I tried a test fit on a bit of wire, and it seems to be fine.

Looks great! How did you get the stock heatsink a off? Also those heat sinks look bigger, how did you reattach them? It looks like they might be screwed to the board some how?

I heated them up using my heat gun then credit card + platic wedge and they went off pretty easily. They are attached with those plastic pins. Originally they have 55mm holes, but I enlarged them to 57 and not they fit perfectly. Card is much much cooler and also completely silent because of those 5v noctuas.

This one will probably do the job but ideally youll want the IWISS IWS-3220M if youre going to be crimping lots of JST, Dupont or Molex terminals.

Done this mod myself aswell, these are the heatsinks i used; (you do need to file the mounting points a bit to have them fit properly)
