Yes, using a socket to get Pentium 3 to work sounds like a valid option to me. Checked the prices of the Pentium 3 and they are ok as of now. I could even go up to 1 GHZ, but I'm not sure if that is feasible.?

Price wise P3 850 or 900 MHZ would be the most attractive.

But if the jump to the 1ghz range is worth it i would not mind to pay some extra money...

An economical option is P3 Coppermine 750-800MHz at a 100MHz bus.
In which case, it is almost guaranteed may be overclocked to 133 bus.

Thanks for the info. That is is good to know that there might be some compatibility issues with the 133 frontside bus. Need to do some more research if the Ps2b mb is among these mb with compatibility issues or not. A P3 Coppermine 750-800MHz is indeed a very economical option and if is possible over clock them could give me even some more extra power which is a good thing in the long run.

But there is no need to hurry. At first, I will set up the system as it is in the upcoming weekend, and then in case everything works out of the box I will take my time to see what the p2 400 mhz and the tnt 2 can do.

While doing that I keep shopping around on ebay for some p3 coppermine and another video card and if something strikes my eye as a bargain I will get it.

Thanks for the info.

It's not information, it's more of a note.
There are compatibility lists for p2 series boards on the Internet.
Pcb version 1.1 with numbers up to xxxx contains a clock generator such and such, it does not correctly know how to initialize the 133MHz bus.
Until number yyyy - PWM controller supports only 1.8V core supply voltage.

For such and such a motherboard, there is a patched BIOS from enthusiasts with support for such and such processors.
For the other - there is an alpha BIOS from asus with support for such and such processors.

There are similar threads on this forum.

I own an ASUS P2B rev 1.10 I believe. It has the proper power regulator so I am able to use Coppermine Slot 1 CPU's and SLotket with socket 370 Pentium 3 cpu. I'm currently running a Pentium 3 900mhz CPU on the P2B mobo using a slotket with the fsb at 100mhz and 512mb of RAM. (Overkill). I use a Voodoo 3 3000 agp for video but I have tested many graphics cards on the system. Gforce 4 ti, and the mx 440. The Mx 440 was perfect. (aside from the Voodoo 3) and I did notice the faster CPU made a difference. You should have no trouble finding a cheap coppermine slot 1 Pentium 3 thats faster than 400mhz. Just make sure its a 100mhz fsb slot 1.

I would buy only the 100mhz fsb Pentium 3's. Do not buy 133fsb CPU's for this board, it will downclock them anyway so it's a waste. For example, I wanted to test my slotket so I put a 133fsb P3 900mhz cpu in there and it ran at 700mhz because of the multiplier. Anyway, yeah just use 100fsb cpu's on that mobo.

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness, that is life.

Thanks for the info. If that's the case I will stick the P3 with 100 fsb to keep things simple and not wasting resources. The avaibility of the 3 100 fsb is quite good luckily. Have found 650 mhz, 700 and even 900 mhz variants.

I think I will go for the 650 or the 700 mhz variant.

Or would it be worth to consider the most powerful one as well? Would there be practical difference between 700 and 900 mhz cpu?

From a financial point of view the 900mhz would be the most expensive cpu. the difference is not that big but still.

I just wonder if the p3 900 is worth the extra money?

what do you think?

Yes I would say so. The performance difference between the 600mhz and 900mhz I was running was noticable. Don't bother trying to buy a 1ghz 100fsb one though, way too overpriced.

Thanks for your opinion. Yes I have already figured out that th1 ghz 100fsb are in indeed overpriced.

I have pulled the trigger already btw and got myself p3 900 mhz with the 100 fsb.

I will not install it right away though. I need to find a Slotket adapter first and I want to play around few weeks with the pentium 2 400 mhz first to see what it can do . That would be the ideal scenario if I am lucky and everything works as planned. have not set my system yet. Will do it this weekend.

I am still glad that I have p3 900mhz now just in case I need something more powerful.
