There are many options. What late Win98 games are you targeting?

I am interested in playing games like

Drakan
Unreal Tournment
Quake 3
Heavy Metal Fak 2
Deus Ex
Diablo 2
Star Voyager Elite Force
Noctourne
Vampire the Masquarede Redemption
No one lives Forever

I also want to play the orginal versons of Half Life and the Add Ons despite teh fact I have these games on steam fully playable on my modern day Pc.

and also maybe some 2001/2002 games like Return to castle wolfenstein, Max Payne, Nolf 2 , MOH Allied Assault and Jedi Knight 2.

I play the same games on a P4 2.8ghz and a ti4200 is really good at it. It's a great over clocker to so you can push it to 4400 level is and it would be more than enough for those game. I would say a fx5500 or better a 5700 will do the same and more for the 5700 (AA filter and and AF). The 4200 is great and readily available the 5700 is better but harder to find !

Thanks a lot for your recommendation as well. I think you are right. The Geforce Fx 5700 or maybe even 5900 would be interesting as well but they are harder to find compared to the Geforce 4200.

@all you guys really helped me a lot and I have narrowed down my research to either the readeon 9600 or gf 4200 for a bit more modern gpu.

And for comtemporary gpus i will do some research about the gf 2 as well.

Good value Win98 Graphic Card. Fx5900

For those with an unlimited budget and brand loyalty
Athlon XP 1600+ vs Athlon XP 2100+ for a Voodoo 5 5500

Thanks for posting the links. it was a nice read for sure.

About the Voodoo 5. It would be undeniably cool to have one but not at the current prices.

At the current price rate the only 3dfx card I could justify to buy would be the voodoo 3 2000 . And even the V3 is not a bargain.

Have done some more research and price vice I will either go with a ati Radeon 9600pro or Radeon 9600 Se. I found both for a similar price. Which one would you guys pick? I think the pro would be the more powerful card right?

A geforce 3 ti 200 or the geforce ti 4200 are not of the table either but they are a bit more expensive.

Yea, the 9600Pro will be the faster card.
The XT was the top tier model, then the Pro slightly below that, then there was a vanilla 9600, and the 9600SE was the slowest variation I believe (also used for OEMs I believe).

Avoid SE (64-bit VRAM acceess).
Go for Pro with BGA memory chips or passive non-Pro (Sapphire).

Thanks for the warning. I am going to do that.

@Scali Thx for the info as well.

@all I will pull the trigger in the next couple of days. At the moment everything points towards the 9600pro but I might have the chance to snatch a a Elsa Gladiac (thats a normal Geforce 3 I believe) at a decent price.

Power wise the 9600pro would be the best choice but a Geforce 3 could also be a nice choice due to ability of the cards to display some legacy graphic features the Radeon cards are not so good at.

But nothing is set in stone yet. It is not sure if the Elsa card is still working nor not. It has not yet been tested. the current owner is going to test it in the next couple of days.
