Hi Guys,

I've got an 3dfx Voodoo Rush (using the MX 2d chipset) and I'm having issues with running Quake 2/3 (I assume any GL/MiniGL game), direct 3d seems fine.

Specs:
Pentium 3 500MHz
256mb Ram
Windows 98se

I have tried two drivers from here: https://falconfly.vogonswiki.com/rush.html

Macronix Voodoo Rush V1.02.11B
3dfx Mancuso Mix 2.0

When trying Quake 2 after switching to MiniGL the game starts and hard crashes after half a second.

In Quake 3 I get some graphical corruption/random lines on the right hand side, it then hard crashes after about 1 second.

I've got two of these MX cards and both seem to act this way, so 99% sure it is a driver or miniGL issue.

3dmark99 runs fine (I'm assuming it is using the rush and not the MX).

Any ideas?

I found this info in another forum:

Under D3D, the Rush has no problems with fast CPUs. It crashes under Glide. Perhaps there are problems with the SSE instruction set. But I also suspect the image memory, which causes the card to freeze sooner or later depending on its clock rate. Maybe it's also a driver problem? A fast CPU delivers the data too quickly and the image memory can't keep up until it is full and the system freezes.

You use a Pentium III CPU with SSE, so I would try out a slower Pentium II.

Thanks for the reply, I did also test a Pentium 2 350MHz, same issue, but I think it maybe related. I will do some more checking...

The Rush is such a pain!

Thanks no the P2 350 was 100Mhz, I will try 66mhz!

It's PCI so not sure why that would matter, but I will test.

Also tested with 66MHz FSB? This is also a problem with the original Voodoo Graphics. DOS Games are crashing with this card at 100MHz FSB.

The Pentium 2 300MHz made a difference, I can now start a time demo in Quake 3, although it does still crash, but seems related! Interesting, I wonder why only OpenGL is impacted and not direct3d
