I think it's as a result of my card being set to P300 instead of P330, but I can't seem to change it.

If you're using FM or AWE32 General Midi, the MPU-401 port shouldn't have any effect.

Another thought has occurred to me. Some games require a certain amount of conventional memory to be able to play midi and sound effects. How much conventional memory do you have free?

@AdamP - I think I'm getting somewhere, ran Aweutil, then Diagnose, everything went fine until it said "Failure to set IRQ7"

Why does it want to set IRQ7? What's wrong with IRQ5? If possible, I would prefer to keep it at IRQ5.

The other question I have is Diagnose still sets MPU-401 to P300, isn't P300 for External Midi Devices? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still new to this.

Something else (probably the LPT port) may be set to IRQ7 or IRQ5. Yes, 300 and 330 are for midi devices. You can try reserving IRQ5 for ISA devices in the BIOS.

Best thing to do is to just disable LPT port after all you never used it any way unless you got old parallel printer or is want to do old school networking like with laplink which transferring data with Interlnk.exe & Intersvr.exe in DOS mode.

Update: Well, I got Wolf 3D working in Win98 with full sound and MIDI, don't ask me how, since it never worked before. 😀

So that leaves Darkseed and King's Quest 7, which I run In DOS because they don't seem to work in Win98. Any Ideas?

I don't want to change my IRQ from 5 to 7, because I have loads of DOS Games happily running in Win98 on IRQ5.

On Darkseed, sound works perfect in DOS, but no MIDI.
In Win98 MIDI works, but the game freezes after the opening clip.

Same with King's Quest 7 Sound is perfect, but no MIDI.

@shspvr: I've already fully patched KQ7, the problem doesn't seem to be
related to the games, since I just got KQ7 working with MIDI in Win98, albeit
with the wrong instrument set.
Darkseed is working with sound, but no music in MS-DOS Mode, so I guess I
should be grateful that I can still play it (Sound is more important than MIDI.

So my problems are "Patched" for now, but I still want to get the AWE64
optimized for MS-DOS Mode. Is there a way to change IRQ etc. without
affecting the Windows 98 settings?

@AdamP, You were right earlier about the LPT1 port hogging IRQ7, so I
disabled it, but "Diagnose" still can't set IRQ7. 🙁

Thanks.

OK, So I Downloaded MSD.EXE and this is what I got for IRQ7:

IRQ---Description----Address-----Detected----Handled By
7-------LPT1:-------0070:0465-----No-------System Area

I have disabled LPT1 at BIOS level.

What about IRQ5?

Sound cards don't appear on here, as DOS doesn't recognise them. But it should tell you if something else is taking it.

Did you reserve IRQ5 or 7 in the BIOS?

IRQ---Description----Address-----Detected----Handled By
7-------LPT2:-------CF4A:0082-----No-------Default Handler

No I haven't reserved them, all are set to "Available", should I change that?

Thanks.
