How about closing open registrations? You could set up any future registration by admin only. That completely stopped spam on my Wiki.

The attacks are driving up the server load and bandwidth usage. (and I don't think an admin only approval would have helped, given what they managed to bypass so far.... )

It should be up, but in read only. It will stay that will for a while, until I am certain that bot attacks aren't successful anymore. As at the top of the attack, they managed to add 55000 spam articles to it in a couple of days.
