I want to install windows 98 on a partition of my xps m1710 laptop as triple boot retro system . The setup goes well untill the last reboot before the finish . I got the KRNL386.EXE not found message . The file is already in System dir I copied also in system 32 and windows dir . Nothing changed I get the same error. I tried several disks for install the same .Any ideas what cause this ?

I'm not sure, but I wonder if it's the kind of thing that can occur when the file is too far from the start of the disk so it can't be read by the BIOS and can instead only be read in 32-bit mode?

How big is the partition containing that file and how big are any partitions before it on the disk?

If you hit F8 at startup and select "Command prompt only", does SCANDISK report problems accessing files too?
