256 color games existed in the DOS era, but I don't recall seeing any such in the Post-Windows 95 era. I would be intrigued to see if such a game existed in that era and how it played, considering 3D accelerated 9x usually had as low as 256 color support.

Windows 3.1x games? Some were using 236c, but many just 16c. I'm thinking of shareware/freeware, mainly.

Many of the Sierra SCI games for Windows 3.1 already had 16-color dithered fallbacks

Bad thread title, I should have mentioned "post Win95"

Nah, never mind. I had experienced this back in the 90s.
A friend from school was asking me if I could borrow him one of my games, "Mario Kart".
So I brought him my cassette of "Mario Kart", for Super Nintendo, of course.
Turned out he meant "Mario Kart 64", but he didn't say so.

Yup, I used pre Win95 so seldom that I often forget to disregard that in my statements. Same happens when I talk of WinNT (and that I want to disregard Win2K and older).

You'll see 256 colors used in software 3d acceleration of the time. I have a list of games in this thread below. If you see any errors or adds, please feel free to let me know and I'll update.
