Planning to use Windows 95 on an old 486 DX4 100mhz Iäm planning to get but it seems like my chances of fidning an up to date internet browser is quite slim...am I right?

yes but firefox needs a 233 mhz processor MINIMUM and he has a 486.

I dunno about you, but it was usable on my 150MHz Pentium. Then again it had 80mb of ram

I was hoping for some browser to work for downloading files etc so I don't have to fiddle with transfering stuff from my Mac or main PC via cd-rom's

Tried Firefox 1.5 on my 486 once. To my surprise it worked, but it wasn't really useable because of the lame CPU and low RAM (64 MB).

What about a simple Windows p2p network (Samba)? FTP? SCP? These things work great on my 486 with DOS/Win3.11.

IE 5.5 is probably the fastest option. And it will work pretty well. It's probably a scary exploit disaster warning zone though. I use it occasionally without much issue on my retro-building excursions. It's the newest IE that will work on Win95.
Just use IE4, it's so old no one even remembers how to exploit it, or much more importantly, would try to do so...

This man speaks the truth. For me I can play all my games from all different ages on one PC, as opposed to having several DOS machines. For instance the one you mentioned will run several games way too fast at 100mhz, while at the same time you can't play high resolution Vesa games without struggling.
