Some time ago I decided to play Half-life 2. I could not find my original CD's so I started downloading game from internet. But all versions I tried had Directx 9.0 by default and my performance was horrible.

I finally found the very first versions of the game (original from 2004 year).
It can be downloaded from here : REMOVED

It has start.bat file as loader. When I open it with notepad it has "hl2.exe -steam" typed. If I run game directly from HL2.exe it wont start. When I use start.bat file game runs flawlessly and performance is spectacular on 1080p (but I had to enable compatibility settings of Windows XP SP3 to hl2.exe).

However lets get into root of the problem. When I try to save game or load autosave game crashes.

Any ideas?

So called "abandonware" is not supported here. Ask for help from where you downloaded it from or from the steam emulator developer.
For builds of HL2 <= 5135 use Revolution Steam Emulator with the appropriate switch. The ancient steamemu emulator is likely in use by copies of the game found online which could possibly be an issue.
