Hi Guys,

I have a 486 133 that i want to set up for using diable and starcraft under windows.
What would you recomment installng, win95 osr2.5, win98 or win98SE performance wise.
Also what would be the best choice for Directx as for performance in those games and compatibility stay with older dx3 or dx5 or use dx6 7 or 8?

I have not the time to try all the combo's, anyone with exp?

Is it an isa/vlb based 486 or pci? I would use windows 95c and probably test a few different directx versions but starcraft and diablo are screaming pentium 166 or 200.

am5x86 133 i'm guessing. 95c, DX6.1 or 7 (you cannot install 8 or higher - requires Pentium), and set memory waitstates low.

Win95c (OSR 2.5) and hope for the best. Diablo will probably run okay, Starcraft might be kinda slow, minimum requirements stated a Pentium 90.
Perhaps if you overclocked the 486 (if you have an am5x86 that is) to 160MHz (40MHz FSB) you would get better results.

Not sure why leileilol suggests DX6.1 and 7, DirectX 5.0 would be enough for these games. She may have her reasons though.

I played and finished starcraft on am5x86.

Will work , just loong load time , and the last mission with kerrigan (humans) will be slooooow because you will have to defend zerg base against constant protoss attack.

It is an IPC NEAT-470 all in one board, a 4mb edo ram, a qfp am5x86 and xtra simm slots for 64 or more mb, 512kb cache, ct65550 pci vga, and running an 5.1 gb qunatum fireball in dma, and scsi for external plextor drive and a sb64gold and 3c515 100mbit isa, because the rest is 7x isa16bit to expand the system, in a small box.

I intend to overclock, but have to modify the clock generator, later project, win95 c runs ok

I'd also run it at 160mhz (4x40). I personally had no luck with 150mhz (50x3), it was slower than 160mhz for me and it crashed all the time.
