This has been a problem ever since I installed this game. Shadows under characters, shadows under cars, and textures (blood, signs, etc.) all flicker seemingly nonstop. There will be periods when none of this happens, but most of the time all these things flicker. It seems it only happens with textures that are on top of other textures (called decal textures I believe). All my drivers are up to date (I checked) and the game is at the latest version (1.2). This problem is really irritating. How do I get rid of it?

Mafia is a DirectX 8 game and I am running it on a PC with DirectX 11

I am not getting any artifacts onscreen. The textures themselves are flickering. Multipass rendering actually makes more things flicker.

What graphics card do you have? If you have Intel GPU or a laptop with Nvidia Optimus, you may have to use WineD3D on Windows to get rid of the problem.

Try this: http://enbdev.com/download_convertor_dx8todx9.htm

Extract d3d8.dll and enbconvertor.ini to the game's main directory. If that doesn't help, download the latest WineD3D libraries (available here: http://adolfintel.com/index.php?p=wined3d/index.frag ) and use the following files: d3d8.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll.

Ok so the enb convertor changed nothing. I removed them and put the WineD3D files into my Mafia folder. Now when I try to start the game, the white LS3D window pops up and it just stays there. The game doesn't start.

I am using the Steam version. Would that have anything to do with it?

So I tried another DirectX 8 game, F1 Challenge 99-02, and it also has the flickering problem (happens wherever two textures converge or overlap). ENB and Wine do not fix it either.

That makes it sound like you have only tried 2 games
is the problem dx 8.0 games do dx 8.1 games work ?
According to the readme F1 Challenge 99-02 is a dx 8.1 game
(allthough it was probably just compiled with 8.1 as the game supports dx 6 cards as long as they have 8.1 compatible drivers)
What hardware do you have
can you post a screenshot of the problem

Here is a video of the problem in Mafia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y8NyVUu5vI

Notice how the shadow under the car and the section of the building I focus on both flicker. Later on, the blue sign on the gas station at the end of the road flickers as I approach it.

I have an ATI Radeon 8700 with 2GB DDR3 memory. I have 8GB of RAM and am running on DirectX 11.
