My problem is with the GL version of Hexen 2. The normal version works just fine, and in GL I get as far as the menu. But after the class and difficulty has been selected, the game freezes once the first loading bar is almost full and I am forced to restart.
If it helps, I use Windows 2000 and the version of Hexen 2 is 1.11.
My graphics card is of the Radeon 9000 series.
Do not use the original GL Hexen II, it doesn't work so go here and look for NewHexen:

Download the zip file and unzip it to your Hexen II folder, go there and make a shortcut of the NewHexen executable file. Send it to desktop (or anywhere else!)
Be sure that you removed the "opengl32.dll" from the Hexen2 directory before running NewHexen.
You still need to configure the resolution the old way, in the shortcut target window do it like this:
"C:\Hexen II\NewHexen.exe" -width 1280 -height 1024 -bpp 16 -nojoy"
Or any other screen resolution you want 😀
New problem. When I try to run NewHexen I get the message PR_LoadInfoStrings: couldn't load infolist.txt.
NewHexen sucks, not to mention it's non-Free (they don't provide the latest source). It's also out of date and doesn't focus on portability.
What I recommend is using this, this is a no-nonsense engine:

Do you have Portal of Praevus installed? Its the expansion pack for Hexen II.
If not get the unofficial Hexen II patch, it may solve your problem, look for the Hexen II link here:
A progs.dat problem wouldn't solve a hardware issue.
Thanks all of you. After getting that unofficial patch GL worked like a charm. Only thing is, I don't see that much improvement over the normal version of Hexen 2.
I mean, on my old system GL Quake looked better. Don't know if its something I'm doing wrong or my system just isn't good.

Actually never mind. I compared again and apparently GL does look better. Guess I wasn't looking too closely. Thanks anyway though.
Now the only problem I have is a gameplay glitch where a note that triggers a certain event doesn't seem to be appearing. You solve one problem another pops up.
Now I just need to get %$^@ Septerra Core working. Still have no idea how I'm going to do that if I can't even get it properly installed.
