I recently purchased Urban Chaos on Steam, and no matter what I try, I cannot get the Steam overlay to work with this game.

The launcher only allows you to select 16-bit or 24-bit color, so I'm thinking that this might be the issue? However, I have seen other players manage to get it working, as there are screenshots for the game on the Steam community page - ontop of that, I haven't seen a single complaint of the overlay not working outside of my own.

I'm running Windows 10 currently.

Can anybody help?

It's a DirectX 7 game. The Steam overlay only works with DirectX 8+.

There are only two people who posted screenshots. They probably used this complicated way to upload them manually: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCgX-lSl2kg

However you can use a wrapper like dgVoodoo that translates the game's DirectX 7 to something else and the Steam overlay will work.

Ah! Well, it's good to know it wasn't just me then. Thanks for this.

You have just made me a very happy person

I can now run pretty much any old game I like with the Steam overlay thanks to dgVoodoo2. Thank you so much!
