By someone who had lived through the Geforce 6 to 9 days (on XP)..
Do yourself a favor and skip anything prior to Geforce 8.

More than often I disabled integrated GF6/7 on-board graphics and installed a "real" graphics cards.
And not for gaming. These on-board devices were too poor for office use, even.

Don't get me wrong, Geforce 2, 3 and 4 had their place (great on both 98SE/Me/XP and Power Macs).
But when Geforce FX (Geforce 5) debuted, the Geforce series basically did a re-boot and needed some time to recover.

Geforce 8 was the first generation to be supported by browsers and Flash 10.2+, if memory serves.

And the XP drivers for Geforce 8 (and up) are a few years more recent to what was available for Geforce 7 and before.

I mean DX9 XP era games released around 2001-2006. Someone mentioned games like Republic Commando and this game has some bump mapping issues on modern cards, but this issues can be fixed with patches apparently. But are there issues in games that can't be fixed and you need 7 series exactly?

DirectX 9.0 was in December 2002. It was not mainstream adopted until 2004. See if your GeForce model is supported by forceware 93.71. This is late 2006.
