You know what would be funny? A soundfont where all patches are someone trying to mimic instruments with their mouth. We could call it the Bobby McFerrin SoundFont, and it would sound like this:

Compiling all of those instruments into a GM-compatible soundfont works, but the instruments are all an octave too low. I assume I would have to manually re-setup the key ranges and root notes...for every instrument/sample. Also, those XI instruments do not contain information such as release times, causing the notes to instantly "stop" upon note off. Does the real OPL4 behave the same way? I also have no idea what the panning and pitches of the percussion instruments are supposed to be.

I guess the .XI instruments don't have their volume envelope properly setup if you can't find "release times".

I made a soundfont out of the OPL4 XI format instruments.

* I don't know how accurate it is to the real OPL4's GM set.
* All of the GM instruments and layers are there.
* The XI files lack settings for things like volume and modulation envelopes, so some instruments (like the timpani for example) sound kind of horrible.
* Certain instruments (mainly the sound effects, such as bird tweet and applause) may be an octave too high or too low. I don't know which octaves their samples' root keys should be in.
* I used SCC1T2.SF2 as a reference for the drum samples' envelopes and panning.

Edit: I'm currently in the process of trying to "fix" the pitches of the percussion samples.
Edit: Percussion sample tunings and root keys are now fixed.

I've long wondered, was the SC-55 actually a synthesizer, or simply a ROMpler with a distinctive instrument set? I know it uses samples to an extent, but what does it do with them that distinguishes it from the Roland MIDI synth built into Windows?

Compared to DLS level1? way to much to list xD (specs on both are all over the web)
(kinda a shame the MS GM.dls was never updated to take advantage of the DLS 2 spec)

There are synthesis features to the SC-55, I'm surprised that they aren't noticeable to you... Just listen to some of the pad instruments for example.

Also to add most of the sample"s for the MS Synth (including all the Soundfont's converted from it like scc1.sf2)
are clearly not RAW SC55 Rom sample's. they look like they was sampled looped and reduced in quality with no synth effects. to work on low end synths (like VSC)
and meet the minimal requirement for Dls level 1 (spec so low it make PAT format look Advanced)
at best they are Low quality recordings of SC-55/88 (yes some of the Dls sample's are actually from the Sc88)
can see most of this by simply opening the Dsl file

i think roland never intended to recreate the SC 55 they was just giveing MS a GS Maped bank that was balanced

Hmm, has anyone ever done any video comparisons between the two? Also, is it possible to directly access the SC-55's synth engine and program sounds that don't use samples?

the SC-55 ROM is out there on the net
no one probably willing to touch it for legal reasons (while recorded sample's are in a grey area)

This sound bank was created from nothing but a 1/2 second P.C. speaker beep, and requires 29KB of AWE-32 RAM.

The presets in the sound bank are:

0 = P.C. Speaker Beep
1 = P.C. Speaker Chime
2 = P.C. Speaker Synth
3 = P.C. Speaker Drum
4 = P.C. Speaker Pop

Load PCBEEP.SF2 into "User Bank 001", and then play the demo MIDI (PCBEEP.MID) with any MIDI player. Surprising, isn't it <BG>?
