I recently started playing MechWarrior 2 again. To do so I assembled a few Retro Rigs. I dug through my collection of old PC parts and found a Matrox m3D (PowerVR PCX2). I remember the PowerVR looked impressive when games were programed specifically for it.

I believe the Native API was called "PowerVR SGL" and "PowerVR Extreme". I would like to have a list of Titles that supported this API. I am NOT looking for D3D titles.

Here are the games I know of:
MechWarrior 2 PowerVR Edition
Interstate 76
Ultimate Race 3 Track
Tomb Raider
Quake 1 & 2

I have all these Titles except for MechWarrior 2 PowerVR Edition.
If anyone could help me locate this game I would appreciate it.

I know there are many 3DFX Glide Lists but I still haven't found a good PowerVR List.
Please if you know of more titles add to this list.

Actually some of the games listed here don't directly use the SGL api and go through a OpenGL mini-gl wrapper (anything Quake based) or Direct3D.

Half-Life's PowerVR "support" never worked for the PCX2, only the Neon250. (Attempting to play Half-Life on the PCX2 will run out of texture memory and cause everything to turn white and freeze the computer)

Ok, following this are NATIVE sgl games:

Unreal (up to a certain patch) and Klingon Honor Guard supports PowerVR SGL natively. The rest of the UnrealEngine games contain a broken SGLDrv that doesn't work anymore (since that certain Unreal patch)

There's also a special version of Tomb Raider which was mentioned. Die By the Sword had a native PowerVR SGL patch available on Interplay's support site at the time.

The most recent game with native PowerVR SGL support was Metal Fatigue by Psygnosis in 2000.

I doubt a PowerVR SGL edition of Mechwarrior 2 existed.

Also slightly unrelated, the KYRO series has no SGL support at all.

Thanks for the aside about the KYRO. I was thinking about trying some of these games with that card and that saved me some trouble.

Very cool stuff. Thanks for posting all the games so far. 😊

There seems to be some doubt about an actual PowerVR MechWarrior 2.
Just go here http://www.geocities.com/k_lupinsky/index.htm
You might be amazed about how many Special Editions there were.
The author of this page believes the 3DFX & PowerVR were the best.
From very recent personal experience the 3DFX version is nice but missing ALOT of textures on mechs, vehicles, and buildings.
Also many textures are horribly stretched.
I verified this with both a Original CD and bootleg. I tested on a Voodoo1 and glide wrapped Nvidia6600 with dgVoodoo.
Below is a pic showing the missing/stretched mech textures on 3DFX.
Notice the missing camouflage on the torsos and missing/stretched missile pod textures. Even DOS had better Mech texturing.
These lovely ATI Rage shots were taken from this wonderful gallery.

I would love to play the PowerVR Mech2. Someone Please Help! 😀

I also have i PowerVR PCX2 in my old PC@200mhz. It required a faster CPU than any other 3D card. And after DirectX6 many 3D games didn't work with it. So later i had to put a Riva TNT to play 3D games.

I played Half-Life with my PowerVR (most of my frinds didn't had a 3D when the game was released). And my PC didn't freeze. Sometimes i had some texture problem, but was that was rare.

Moon Racer was funny but ONLY for PowerVR actually. I still wonder if anyone has the ye olde PowerVR PCX1 version of Ultim@te Race 1 track as it had one huge track linking the smaller ones found in 3-track or UR Pro. I wondered if anyone could port/hack it into UR Pro 🤣

My PC spec: Win10 64bit, i7-4970K (not overclocked), KFA2 GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, Creative Soundblaster ZXr, 16GB RAM, Asus Z97-A motherboard, NZXT 410 case, ROG Swift GSYNC monitor

trawling through old threads ... apparently this extended version of ultimate race came only with the power vr cards. Ultimate race pro was the same track cut down in three manageable sections and with 3dfx and direct 3d support.
Has anyone got this demo available to upload or sell.
I have ultimate race pro but have always wanted the demo that came with the power vr cards.

Pro is an extended version.

You're thinking too highly of the original Ultim@te Race. It's less than Pro.

And sadly yes it only works on older PowerVR cards. Unless you have a PowerVR card (in which you'll most likely have Ultimate Race which is bundled with every friggin' one of them) you can't run it

I never owned a power vr card, never that is until about a week ago.
It was just the card not the cd's that came with it. So I do not have the demo.
I will have to settle playing the pro version.

NO

Kyro works with only Direct3D and OpenGL, only the PCX1-2 and Neon250 (iirc) can do the SGL api, but they can't do OpenGL (as in the full ICD. There are SGL MiniGL drivers intended for use with id Tech 2 engine games only)

Was the PowerVR Neon250 actually released as a retail graphics card? Or was the chip used elsewhere instead (e.g. DreamCast)?

I can say I've never seen a Neon250 graphics card.

Yes but its rarity is part of the fact that almost no one bought them. By the time of its release the GeForce 256 was out and the Neon 250 got smoked in performance by cards released nearly a year earlier. There was one though that showed up on ebay a while back (and it fetched quite a hefty sum).

Of course, in the closed-box world of the Dreamcast it's all fine and dandy.

Dreamcast's graphics chip is not quite the same and is quite a bit more powerful than Neon 250.

So which were OEMs made the PowerVR Neon250 for the PC retail market? How many different type of branded cards are there that we know of?

As far as I recall VideoLogic's (read: Imagination Technologies - aka PowerVR's parent company) Neon 250 was the only one that made it into the retail channel.
