I'm thinking of replacing my Voodoo 3000 AGP in my Amd k6-2+ box with this card I just bought, an Asus Geforce 2 Ultra since it's much swifter

Will I loose support in early 3d games and loose all VESA/Dos game support?

Depending on your SS7 motherboard, you may run into compatibility problems with this card, because it draws rather much power from the AGP slot.
Problems were reported with early revisions of many SS7 boards and high-end (back at the time) 3D cards like TNT2 Ultra and GeForce 2 GTS/Ultra.

Installed the card yesterday, work fine so far...haven't tested any DOS game though

It's one of those late VIA MVP based boards

hmmm, yea like 5u3 said, VIA MVP3 doesn't like AGP cards that use lots of power or try to fully use the AGP standard. You will probably have issues with it in some games. 3D may not work at all, random reboots, BSODs...

Those SS7 boards had terrible AGP compatibility and performance. In my experience the only boards that really work well in them are AGP Voodoo cards.

An update to this thread...

Thanks to 5u3 tips on how to get my joyport working I've started using this machine..

Tested some SVGA games and come to the conclusion that some won't work...one is Nascar 2 that doesn't want to launch since the univbe driver (uvconfig) that comes with it doesn't like my card...have ran this game on my 486 with has a tseng et4000w32p based card and it doesn't need this driver since I think my gfx card has built in VESA support this game needs
So I stuffed in a Geforce 256 32mb card...same result...another GF2 produced the same result

Do i just own some incopatible models of the Geforce cards or do their VESA support generally suck?

I've found that GeForce cards offer pretty decent VESA support, actually. The problem is that some games rely on VBE drivers that aren't going to recognize a GF2. All video cards have buggy DOS implementations. There is no such thing as the perfect card. It's just that games worked around issues in cards were out at the time. DOS was a nightmare for hardware support.

You may find some useful VESA utilities in my old thread. Although few of them will do anything for a GeForce.

mm...suspected this was the issue

Have noticed some weird univbe issues also, version 6.x refuse to recognice my CL5426, Ati Mach64, Tseng ET4000w32p but olders version like version 5.x something works...maybe the later unvivbe versions are made for PCI cards?

I couldn't get it to recognize a TNT2, even though it says that it is supported. So who knows. If the older version works for you, it's the way to go. 😀

I finally decided to use a Geforce FX5200 I had lying around since it has a nice DVI connector on it 😁

Seems like this Epox board handles most AGP cards...I bet it will work with a GF FX5950 too

At least UniVBE 6.7 seems to need a PCI bus present on the system, however the graphics card needn't be PCI (looks like it's a bug - why would they include stone age drivers if they only wanted to support PCI cards)
