What is the most suppoorted and best joystick for pre Windows 95 games?

Have a CH Flighstick which is supported in some games but my throttle control seems to be broken 😜

Any joystick supported by SDL will work with DOSBox, which equates to any joystick that works in Linux/Windows/etc., but to answer your question; Standard IBM PC joystick, CH Flightstick Pro & CH Virtual Pilot Pro(FSP & VPP were released at the same time; VPP has some additional buttons but they operate the same), Gravis Gamepad(released at the same time as the GUS), Thrustmaster FCS MKI/II, & Thrustmaster WCS MKI/II were the most popular and usual joystick selections. All of these except the WCS are emulated in DOSBOX. I had written these joystick emulations which were rewritten and added to DOSBox. I have an incomplete WCS emulation still sitting on my hard drive. More off topic, I also have joystick emulation for QEMU that I never released(much cleaner than DOSBox handling, does more like mouse as joystick, .. It looked like he was going to go commercial as suggested with his, at the time, closed source accelerator and I didn't care to contribute as an unpaid employee to his commercial product. As well, QEMU STILL doesn't have a web patch submission process. You have to post it in the message board as text. )

Most supported? Thrustmaster FCS/WCS combo no doubt. However, I believe the best pre-Win95 joystick is Thrustmaster F-16 FLCS/TQS combo.

Beware though: never select "Thrustmaster" in a game if you're using F-16 FLCS.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

I'm planning to find a joystick which has some sort of throttle control which works in games like Descent, Wing Of Glory, TFX etc

For arcade games my Saitek 8 button joypad will do the job 😀

Not planning to use DOSBox since emulators are against my religion 😁

That Thrustmaster combo sounds interesting....

If you want throttle with "universal" support, then you should use them in digital mode; that is, translating throttle movements into keystrokes. That way, you can use throttle for games that don't even support throttle device.

Well, there was a joystick that did have some kind of throttle control in Descent. But anyway it is years ago, so even the name has escaped me. But I wish there was a site that showed a butt load of awesome old school pc joysticks 😀

Although the conversation seems here to go in the direction of control sticks, I'd like to point out Directpad pro.

http://arcadecontrols.com/Mirrors/www.ziplabel.com/dpadpro/

These are directions for building a small adaptor to plug console gamepads into the parallel port.

Then you can use SNESKey to configure the buttons and stuff.

http://arcadecontrols.com/Mirrors/www.csc.tnt … ork/default.htm

SNESKey is for MSDOS only. If you want to use these console pads in Windows I recommend Parallel port joystick.

I have a SNES pad as well as a Genesis pad modified for this and I think it is great. Not only to play emulated games of these systems, but because I think these console pads have really never been equalled (especially not in the PC hardware business).

samudra: if I remember correctly then. There has been lookalikes/clones of the SNES and etc joysticks to the PC. And some time ago, you cold buy a USB Saturn joypad. But as I said, I just wish there was a database site with joysticks. Just like there is with SNES joypads. Again, I can´t remember the name or the web adress.

Yes, lookalikes, with heavy emphasis on that.

Lookalikes have been around since the original Gravis Gamepad. In practice they never compared to console pads (for whatever reason).

The American and European Saturn pad is actually very cheaply made, but the Japanese one compares very well with the orignal six button pad for the Sega Mega Drive.

Edit: Nothing, test.

This is not a QEMM error.
