In Dxdiag I can play music with all midi devices available in midi mapper and also with Microsoft Synthesizer.

But Microsoft Synthesizer is not available in Windows 95 and 98 (didn't check Me) MIDI mapper.

Is it possible to use it as a midi device?

Winamp has it as an optional midi device too. And you can assign custom DLS soundbanks to it.

I think since it is a directsound device it is not available to any application that does not use directsound.

Windows 98 installs the Microsoft Synthesizer if your sound chip doesn't come with a native one, which can be used with the MIDI mapper. I know I never got it to show up when I used an AWE64 or Live with it (and similarily could only access the DirectMusic flavor of the synthesizer with WinAMP's in_midi)

I don't remember being able to access it in Win9x except from applications that supported DirectMusic.

I wonder if anyone ever made a wrapper to let you access it from the MIDI mapper.
