I am trying to find out what the is the lowest video resolution of today's video cards.

I figured the developer's here might have a good idea on the minimal resolution of today's video cards.

I heard the newer NVidia cards don't go down to 320x200 anymore. The bigger issue I think is that today's monitors don't go below 640x480.

VGA CRTs never went very low either. Low resolutions like 320x200 are line doubled for example so each line becomes two scanlines. I would be surprised if you can find an lcd monitor that doesn't sync to the text mode that PCs use when starting up, which is essentially the same as a 320x200 video mode from the point of view of the monitor.

edit: I tested OMF through NTVDM, and the native video mode still works fine. I've got a fairly modern video card (Radeon HD4something).

I only say this because I have a 1024x768 LCD monitor and it will not accept 320x200 or 320x240 resolutions.

They do...but only on TV Out mode (from the nvidia realease notes for the latest driver):

320x200 8, 16, 32 DirectDraw mode; not selectable as a Windows
desktop
320x240 8, 16, 32 DirectDraw mode; not selectable as a Windows
desktop
640x400 8, 16, 32 DirectDraw mode; not selectable as a Windows
desktop
640x480 8, 16, 32

You're right about the monitors.

IIRC,
2000-XP only lists 640x480 in the screen resolution screen
Vista+ only lists 800x600 in the screen resolution screen

You have to go into the Advanced menu and then "List all Modes" to choose a lower resolution.

2000 allows 640x480, XP doesn't (that's where the minimum for 800x600 begins)

Windows doesn't allow below 640x480 for desktop, but on Linux you can try native 320x200 resolution desktops 😉

Well all the crappy less than 640x res windows games I've run in Windows that have bombed out to the desktop proves that wrong. 😉

Easier to just reboot the computer at that point than trying to bring up task manager and navigate it blindly. heh.

On the Display Settings tab, where the resolution setting is, cannot go below 800x600, but, there is a "Special" button (maybe its name is video-driver-dependant?) right to "Troubleshooting" click on it, and on the second tab "Video Modes" - this is not just an informative list, the highlighted video mode will be set when you press "OK".

Go to the Adapter tab and there's a button there that says "List All Modes".
