Most may be aware of this already, but anyway, :
You can enable OPL3 in VMWare by adding
sound.opl3.enabled = "TRUE"
in the vmx file.
FM sounds play, but then the digital sound effects are gone.
Tried with DOOM under MS-DOS 6.22 VM.
Ah yes, this was in their VMware Workstation update preview. I haven't updated VMWare player yet, so gonna check this out now. Thanks.

Is the setting for Win98SE using the sb16?
sound.virtualDev = "sb16"
I think for Win9x systems, the FM is emulated with the sb16 virtual device only.
Also, try adding :
sound.synth.operational = "true"
into the win98se's vmx file.
Adding the virtualDev line disables audio completely. What version of VMWare Workstation/Player are you using?
I'm using Workstation 10.
