From my testing, the Aureal Vortex 2 is more compatible with DOS games on the 775dual-vsta, but it doesn't sound as good as a real OPL3 or ESFM.

DOS/98SE : PIII-S 1400/C3 1200, GA-6BXC 2.0, 256MB PC133 C2, GeForce 2 Ultra, Voodoo2 12MB, Audigy1 Platinum Ex, ESS1688, SSD 128GB

XP/7 : i5 3750k, 8GB DDR3 1600, GTX 280 1GB, Radeon X1950 XTX, SSD 512GB

If Aureal Vortex 2 you own has waveblaster, you can cheap with MIDI module like dreamblaster 😉

hi
got a 4coredual sata build here - works fine with hd3850 and a gtx570 and 4gb ram win7 32bit and xp etc - so ive got my hands on a gtx590 but it doesnt post on the asrock board - but i does display/post on a std intel pcie 3 mobo - so the card works but not in either my asrock board or a gigabyte combo board = not posting with the PCIe x4 slot . isnt there something in the bios that needs to be disabled for these Fermi nvidia cards to work ie they dont like ?????

Its not about the card generation, its something about the specific card.
I have several 5xx and 6xx cards which post in the board - and i have also personally seen a few one NOT posting in it.
Try a different video bios.

As mentioned in first post in this thread :

I've also tested dual GPU cards, the HD4870x2 and the GTX295, none works. So far it seems single GPU cards only.

There is no dual GPU that will work on this board (aside from 7900 GX2/7950 GX2, which got specific official BIOS patch to make it work) - not sure why anyone would thought a GTX 590/HD 6990 will when older DX10 dual GPUs didn't ?

If anyone is trying to use 3dfx cards in this motherboard, its a big no-no.

-Voodoo Rush hangs at boot, likely causing an unresolvable irq conflcit with the disk controller. The computer freezes when detecting the hard disk, if the rush is in the computer. I tried all possible PCI ports without success.
-Voodoo3 refused to boot in any of the PCI ports.
-Voodoo2 gets detected, and can be installed. The last beta driver from 3dfx cant work. The last final driver works, but 8 from 10 game simply crashes with it. Even glide games crash. Some games have missing geometry. Croc and F22 lightning 3 runs in glide mode without an issues. Drakan starts, but crashes if start to play and press esc to enter the menu when returning the game. (ok this is the fault of something else, because it does this bug with other graphics cards as well) F1 from 1997 works. The rest of the games i tried (about 30 of them), crash at start, causing the computer to hardlock.

I use this mb with a 12mb voodoo2 and I don't have any problems. I think unfortunately you have an issue somewhere else.

I cant think anything else, because if i use other graphics cards, i don't have issues with those. In the past days, i have used a 3dlabs permedia 2 pci, and everything was fine with that.
The mentioned voodoo cards also work flawlessly in my socket7 system.

Maybe its partially something with the CPU, which older games and drivers dont like. (q9300)
The pci card boot issues are however the fault of the motherboard.

-I am verifying the RadeonHD 6950 (2gb VRAM version) is working in the 775dual-vsta.
-The kepler based nVidia 730 (GDDR5) is NOT working in the motherboard.
-nVidia 1060 is not working in the motherboard. Numlock works, but no boot, and no picture.

Working HD 6950 on this board is interesting

Have you tried any games with it for performance assesment? Because 775DUAL-VSTA contains PCI-E x4 slot instead x16

I'm curious about is there any considerable performance difference between high-end AGP Cards (HD 4670, HD 3850 etc.) and your HD 6950 PCI-e in 775DUAL-VSTA

Ancient system: Intel D865GLC + P4-EE (SL7CH Gallatin) + HD 4670 AGP + 4 GB DDR400 RAM + 256 GB Corsair Neutron SSD + 3 * 320 GB IDE PATA WD HDD

Retro system 2: ASRock ConRoe865PE + Q6600 (SL9UM)+ HD 3850 AGP + 4 GB DDR400 RAM + 120 GB Kingston SSD

I havent made any benchmarks about the card, but i use it actively to actually play games on it once in every week.
I dont play AAA games, i play indie and B class games on it, which are still running on core2quad systems without an issue, although 4gb ram starting to get a little small.
So i am actually playing games, sometimes using the computer to test hardware i am getting if it works, and i don't really measuring the things with this motherboard.
I rarely do benchmarking on this motherboard, because modern graphics cards refuse to start up in it. I use it as more like a retro daily driver system, for actual use, rather than a toy to do benchmarks.

But in short, the 6950 card in it is multiple times faster, under every task, than my agp 3850 or pci-e 3850.
In some titles its only 2x faster, in else, its easily 10x faster.
Its 10x faster especially in the titles where the half gb vram of the 3850 is not enough, and the performance fells drastically due to lack of vram.
2x faster is the usual for the most games, and there are games which are only 30-50% faster due to the limited cpu performance -
(or maybe due to the various weakness of the chipset, including the pci-e bandwidth and memory bandwidth isetlf).

This via chipset is limited to PCI-E x4 because the chipset wouldn't even able saturate the bandwidth of PCI-E x8 even if VIA wanted to.
This chipset can't even saturate dual channel ddr2-666 in real world applications.
Most of the motherboards using this chipset is limited to ddr2-533 dual channel out of the box (and setting it to higher results in system instability), in the 775dual-vsta you can force it to 666, but no change in actual performance if you do so.
The chipset and motherboard has lower than usual performance, just like every hybrid motherboards, meant to bridge the gap between generations, they not meant to break benchmarking records.

The pci-e x4 bandwidth is approximately equal to this chipset's single threaded memory writing capability.

I am sure a better chipset with better ram handling, better overall bandwidth, pci-e x8 or x16, better fsb capabilities, with the ability to run the cpu clock at full speed, and so on, would help the 6950 to reach far more performance.
Or more precisely, i would say, the pci-e x4, the chipsets raw performance, the memory bandwidth, and the cpus performance, all hitting the wall at the same time. So the pci-e x4 is not out of ordinary here.
The relatively weak performance of the system is caused by factors combined, but even so, yeah, you can put a 6950 into the system, you will get quite a nice speed uplift.

Best case scenario :
HD 3850 AGP :

HD 4670 AGP :
file.php?id=245863&mode=view

The attachment 3DMark 03.PNG is no longer available

HD 6970 :

The attachment 3DMark 03.PNG is no longer available

GTX 580 :
file.php?id=245865&mode=view

The attachment 3DMark 03.PNG is no longer available

Main problem will be driver overhead and how far you can take OC of your CPU.
DX11 cards win by default on DX11 only games 😉
