I upgraded my NAS op system from ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 LTS. Result: My Win98SE box could not connect to my read only transfer share for v1SMB retro boxes.
It looks like distros are killing v1 protocol from default configurations.

So adding this section did the trick for me:

2    server min protocol = NT1
3    ntlm auth = yes
4    lanman auth = yes

I've had similar problems with Git and SSH on old versions compiled for Windows 98 and Linux being unable to connect to newer machines, because they no longer support password logins or for unsupported encryption standards versions.

My NAS continues to run CentOS 7.9 with ZFS on a now very old Opteron 6328. It runs perfectly and integrates very well with the vintage computers on my network. I also have a large collection of spare parts at the ready, should the need arise, including two whole motherboards, processors, and memory. It isn't power efficient at all by today's standards, but it does everything I need it to do and will continue to live on for as long as I can manage.

This server contains over a dozen hard drives in it with two redundant arrays with full parity. When prices finally become affordable, I will be swapping out all nine 4TB Western Digital Reds for SSDs; and this time is rapidly approaching.

Got my Pentium 4 Set up and running in the new place. PLayed some Quake 3 on it, ran 3D mark 2001. Good to go to play some games on it now.

Tantalum'd my backwards compatible CECHC04 that had started having its NECs degenerate rather fast. Used 16x 330uF caps and it works fine.

Sorry that I didn't take a photo of the cap install. I was way too excited that it works (considering I have a 40GB CECHG04 mobo dead in my closet, my first attempt at tantalums...)

Before anyone jumps in - the bgtoolset log was full of 1001 and 1002 errors - pointing to the TOKINs.

I have left the ones on the other side of the board as those must be bridged with thick wire if replaced, something I don't currently have.

Actually, yeah I've written it up in my thread where I post all my neo-retro silliness. Close on the Silverstone, but it's acutally a Fractal Design Node 202.

It's evolved a bit since that post:

Let's see...

• swapped the Orpheus II for a GUS Classic + ESS AudioDrive 1869 /w Dreamblaster X2GS
• modded a front-accessible microSD card slot
• added a 160GB 2.5" IDE HD
• connected up the front panel USB ports
• swapped the P90 for 233MMX because...

I've temporarily hooked it up to my home theatre, pretty much just for the novelty of blasting DOS demoscene demos through good speakers using original hardware. Maybe, if I feel like it, I'll get a wireless controller configured for this setup, dunno. 🤔

Last thing for this build is to get a more appropriate video card - the Matrox I have right now actually has pretty terrible DOS VESA 2.0 compatibility (even though it fits so well!).

Did more work on my Pentium 90 build.

I was having issues trying to get expansion cards seated properly. Turns out the motherboard standoffs in this particular case were shorter than standard ones, causing the motherboard to sit a few millimeters too low.

Swapped them out with some longer ones and managed to get some things installed, including an AWE32 and RAP-10.

More testing on the tantalized PS3, stable as a rock! Happy to have prolonged its life.

Up next on the operating table shall be a japanese CECHB00 very soon. For those less in the know, it's the same as my current C04, except it has full PS2 hardware inside, at the expense of no WiFi and card reader. It'll probably be my goal to convert it into a CECHA00, assuming I can transplant parts from a defunct CECHC04 I have as spares. (which would boot up but give ZERO output over HDMI.)

The hardest part will be IDPS patching so I can enable the WiFi and CardReader to work permanently on it.

I had to google the guy, but yeah it then made sense 😃

Tested a Snes for defects, as I need to sell it. So happy to own a Retrotink 2x Mini for these sort of tasks.

I got a few of the CECH-20XX and CECH-25XX models (Slim). All early slim models, and can be jailbroken to install CFW. The late 25's, 30's and super slim (40's) can only have HFW installed.

As gor Ps2 I have no need for BC Ps3's, as I am keeping to real Ps2 for full access to all games. I see BC Ps3 as a novelty. But it is a fun thing to show off never the less.

Early 25s can be modded too IIRC. I have a 1A datecode 2503B with Evilnat 4.90.

For BC, I was thinking of the same thing but what won me over is the wireless feature of the PS3 🤣

You can find third part wireless controllers for ps2 on eBay. And I bet Sony created an expensive wireless Ps2 controller around some 2003'ish. If so, it is really rare these days. Meaning expensive as F'.

Yup.... There are Sony branded wireless Ps2 controller out there in the wild. Found a few on eBay and Amazon.

I very strongly recommend you not do that on your NAS! SMBv1 is very unsecure protocol.

Create a simple VM with some minimal linux instal (e.g. debian netinstall) and configure it to mount your nas shares and then re-share them with SMBv1 support. Whenever you need your retro machines to access nas, you just run your premade vm. And when you are done, you shut the vm down. (NB! You can also use that VM to mount iso images and the drive can also be shared for retro usage - there's your "CD drive emulator"!)

Behind a NAT firewall on a private home network, there is no reasonable surface area to be attacked. It's not a big deal.

Easy to think its real.

I am really not sure how long china can produce crap like this and people are still buying this and think they get a good product.
