VOGONS

I bought this ATI Rage 128 that has both VGA and DVI out. When booting the system emits a normal POST beep and diagnostic code but no video is displayed. Normally if there is no video card connected the BIOS will beep to indicate a problem but this does not happen.

I know what Macs around this time received video cards with DVI earlier than PCs and that these cards were generally incompatible. Does anyone know if the problem I'm experiencing is consistent with using a video card for a Mac or maybe it's just defective?

I was able to get the system to boot with both the Rage 128 and a second PCI card connected. This was all the information provided by HWiNFO.

It is recognized by but does not work with driver version 4.13.01.8006. The drivers will install but Windows locks up when booting. It's also not recognized by Dell driver A06 at all.

Either defective or Mac edition.
However, the PCI ID databases I looked at do not explicitly mention Mac, so you should test on a Mac, too, to be sure.

I don't have a Mac to test. Other listings suggest that it may be for a Mac G4.

Wouldn't flashing it with a PC Rage 128 video BIOS possibly allow it to work ?

There are so many incompatible variations even for the PC of these Rage cards that I don't think it would work. A similar layout with a DVI connector would probably be required and I'm starting to think that all of the ones with DVI are only for Mac.

I think so, too. Never saw one with DVI for PC, and the Mac ones I had all had DVI.

I have a MAC edition Radeon 9600XT with DVI output . I managed to get it working on a PC by flashing it with a PC compatible vBIOS . DVI output does not work, however VGA output works but only on the D VI-A port when using a passive DVI to to VGA adapter . Something similar might be possible in this case .

I don't think it would be a good idea to try flashing this without first confirming whether or not anyone has had any prior success. The reason I bought it was for the DVI output but if that stops working then it won't be any better than any other Rage 128.

I'd rather pass this on to a Mac collector if it still works. I suspect it does but I have no way to test this. I don't collect Macs.

Yep, confirming that'd be an Apple OEM Rage 128 AGP as used in early G4 Towers. Wouldn't bother flashing it over.
