In the last few years people have been playing with SoftMPU in all kinds of weird and wonderful ways. Though this was interesting

SIDI (MiST FPGA refined clone) with Next186 (8086/286) core <--> mt32-pi on Raspberry Pi
Literally two cables between SIDI serial port and RPi GPIO! SoftMPU is used to route MIDI to FPGA COM1/Serial.
The mt32-pi can be set also as SC-55 bare metal. Unfortunately SOFTMPU does not work with DOS4GW protected games, or it would be possible to enjoy Doom, Hexen etc. with SC-55 soundtrack or even custom soundbanks.
THE NIGHTLAND is my board + video game for Commodore 64.
