You are a life saver, cyclone3d. I was worried that this sound version would not work with the 4.00 install of the drive itself, but all is good. Thanks a whole bunch!
And the entertainment today will be Yann Tiersen, whose music sounds no different as a midi (the hum is mostly my AC, but there is a ton of background buzz coming out of this board): https://www.dropbox.com/s/beyv0onqndzj9p2/VID … 171407.mp4?dl=0 😀
You're welcome. Glad it worked for you.

That is indeed quite similar. I have the soundtrack CD and while I have not done an A-B compatison, it does sound quite similar to my ears . Nice!

Hehe 😉 The girlfriend who is very slightly older than this Toshiba Satellite just provided her verdict: "a toy computer playing toy tunes."
Another example of a very midi-compatible "toy tune:" https://www.dropbox.com/s/3x1y1ep0kmt4nog/VID … 171151.mp4?dl=0
cyclone3d wrote on 2022-07-09, 02:21:Do the ones I posted near the beginning of the thread not work for you?
I noted earlier in this thread that the ones you initially posted worked on my 180200, allowing both the CD and sound to function properly.
Maybe those original drivers only works on the 180200 and not the 181200.
Anyone know the difference between these two models?
It's all fun and games 'till someone loses an eyeball
Pretty sure this is the last driver release:
Ans a list if the different drivers and utilities.

Pretty sure the CD drive is just a different speed between the 180200 and 181200. Here is the supported model list for the 4.07 \ 4.17 driver. I'll see what driver versions and additional information I can fins about the drive speeds for the ones that aren't listed.
(180200 doesn't list the drive speed on the box. 181200 is 24x and says that is can read CD-R/W disks). This makes me think that the 180200 and older models may have issues with CD-R/W disks.

I'm tempted to try it, but one of those much newer drivers just stopped working on my laptop out of nowhere. The drive was gone with "driver was not loaded" in the device manager. After uninstalling and installing the older drivers things are back to operational.
Here is a general question... Seems like there's just a generic CD drive inside the 164x enclosure. Do you guys think replacing it would work?
Yeah, it should just be a standard drive. Not sure if it is IDE or another 40-pin like Panasonic or Mitsumi.
Looking up the model number of the installed drive should clear that right up though.
I got one "181100 Backpack 24x bantam 182" or "181100 Backpack 24x bantam 190" without power adapter, does anyone know how can I find a substitute?

I wouldn't be too hopeful, as I have tried with one of the Bantam models I have where the drive is malfunctioning and keeps ejecting itself open. It has an IDE interface, and I have tried multiple different drives both the same brand and period correct, and some newer... none of them will initialize. I don't know what they did to the firmware or the drive but the drivers are looking for something. In the attempts I tried, the computer would hang whenever it was connected or booted up with it connected. Frustrating for sure.
However, I have heard of people with the full size units talking about replacing their drives so maybe the full size backpacks don't have the same issue? I just know the Bantams can't.
The Bantam 181100/181200 both use the TEAC CD-224E-903 drive.
Take care when opening the case, because it's easy to break it. These things were not designed for ease of disassembly.
Is this too much voodoo?
