For consistency, I rename my Cygwin installers for x86 to "setup-x86.exe", and did so for this installer as well. Well, today I found something of a surprise. When the "setup-legacy.exe" installer from Cygwin Time Machine is renamed to this, it throws an error. I downloaded a mirror of Cygwin 1.5.25 years ago, and this is the first time that I've tried installing it on a Windows 9x machine. It was terribly confusing, as I could only find records of success and yet I was receiving this error. I tried to rename the file back to its original name on a whim, and this fixed it.

I wasn't able to figure out what the issue was exactly. For example, the error appears even if I rename it to "a.exe". So be warned. Don't rename this file.

Here is a screenshot of the error dialog, for reference:

It looks like the cygwin time machine is down, ctm.crouchingtigerhiddenfruitbat.org no longer resolves as a DNS name.

Did you happen to share your mirror of cygwin 1.5.25 anywhere? I'm just getting started with setting up NT 4.0 and Visual C++ 6 for some win32 development.

The archive for Cygwin v1.5.25-15, the last release to support Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me can be found here: http://ctm.crouchingtigerhiddenfruitbat.org/p … 3117/index.html

Cygwin 1.7 dropped Windows 95, 98 and Me support.

When you want to install Cygwin under these operating systems, you will need to use the file cygwin-legacy.exe. Remember to use the -X parameter upon installation or it might not work correctly.

I did a search for "Cygwin 1.5.25-15" on archive.org and it returned three results. Here's a ZIP file containing the installation and the archived repo: https://archive.org/details/cygwin-1.5.25-15_latest

Let me know if you run into any problems. 😀

Ah, the DNS failure must have been temporary.

Thanks for the archive.org link!

Hmm, something appears broken with that archive.org collection. Setup doesn't install bash into the bin directory, and in fact I can't find bash anywhere in that collection.
