I always have a question about the MP3 player, in this case Windows Media Player 6.4, which I use on Windows 2000, avoiding the upgrade to WMP9 because it is too heavy, I continue to use the basic version I noticed that with the WMP6.4 some songs MP3s are not played. An error is displayed:
ClassFactory cannot provide the requested class (Error = 80040111)
This error only appears on some tracks. I don't understand, on Windows 10 there are no problems.

+1 to Foobar.
An older version will be needed.

Last version of Foobar for Windows 2000 is 0.9.4.5
I also recommend 'Columns UI' addon for it.

...and remember volume bar will only appear if you click in bottom-right corner (on 0.00 dB) 😀

Adding my vote for Winamp 2.95 as well. It's one of the best and most iconic media players from this time. I remember using it on Pentium 2 Dell Latitude CPi (1998) in my parent's garage around 2000, and of course finding and testing out skins. One of my favorite skins was Syrogenesis v5 (screenshot attached). I have a bunch of Milkdrop presets saved as well.

I still use Winamp today as my main local media player (alongside Spotify) but in the form of WACUP (Winamp Community Update Project). WACUP has some updates that allow it to run better on Windows 10. I use the double-size mode and it looks and runs perfectly on a 4K display. The last official release of v5.666 works okay... but I still prefer WACUP. The maintainer, DrO, was on the original Winamp team I believe.

I used Foobar2000 for a couple years, but only on a Windows 7 era rig when I was getting into FLAC, DACs, nicer headphones, etc.

Winamp was always heavily optimized for 95-XP hardware, so it was and would be my choice for MP3 playback.

Isn't it heavy for my IBM 330 with 200Mhz and 160MB of ram?

not anymore though. Since my post in this necrobumped thread, they've gone crypto-dorks. Get WACUP if you must winamp. Don't let brand nostalgia bite you in the ass.

I don't think WACUP is compatible with windows 2000 as a program born in 2022. So says the site.

i am using foobar 2000 since 2001 / 2002 and never looked back.

It is simply a perfect piece of software; I am a heavy user of Replaygain / Binaural to Stereo for headphone listening (to prevent fatigue) and could not find those in any other good music player.

Yeah, foobar is awesome, supports all the file types. Even flac.

And doesn’t have any of the bloatware that literally every other player seems to have haha.

It’s cool how customizable it is also.

Found this thread while searching for alternatives to play FLAC files on Win9x / ME. As a Winamp lover, stumbled upon this godsend, maybe someone will like it too: https://winampheritage.com/plugin/flac-plugin … winamp-5/131643
