Finally recapped the mobo in my Athlon rig, and now I'm trying to solve a long standing problem. AGP is stuck in 1x mode.

In BIOS the AGP port is set to 4x mode.

CPUz reports 4x as max supported.

The relevant hardware is a Chaintech 7AJA2 KT133A mobo, a Thoroughbred XP 2400+ CPU, and a Geforce Ti4600 GPU. Got Via 4-in-1 driver 4.42 and Detonator 45.23 installed. BIOS is the latest available version, 3A31.

I've visually checked the mobo and GPU for damage, like broken copper traces, missing SMD components etc. Everything looks perfect. Also cleaned the AGP connector thoroughly.

Googled around some, and found a limited amount of info from the time when hardware like this was top of the line, on machines with similar specs exhibiting the same problem. There seems to be no consensus around the underlying reasons though, and no potential fixes. There are indications that the Nvidia driver might lock the AGP port in 1x mode due to instability in higher modes with certain Via chipsets, that sounds plausible.

So, does Vogons have any ideas? 😀

Also, is this even a problem in the reality? Will AGP 1x bottleneck an Athlon XP 2400+ on 266 MT/s FSB, 133 MHz SDRAM, and a Geforce Ti4600 GPU, running games in 1280x1024@75Hz, 32bit color?

Yes, it might to some degree. One of the issues is Nvidia TnL engine, which is hungry for bus speed. And if driver has also disabled Sideband Addressing, you're practically working with PCI-66 bandwidth.

Anyway, that's a usual problem with early VIA AGP implementations and Nvidia drivers which can be fixed by using RivaTuner.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Thanks for clearing that up, seems I'll have to find a solution somehow then. SBA is enabled at least 😀

Might be trying to do it the wrong way, but manipulating AGP settings with Rivatuner doesn't seem to help either. The AGP rate selection dropdown menu only gives me the 1x alternative, and modifying the setting manually seems to do nothing either. I've of course rebooted the computer after trying to apply the setting.

There is a rather idiotic mechanism for determining the voltage, and, accordingly, the mode.

Re: HD 4650 AGP ripped out resistors

For 4x, the regulator near the AGP should output 1.5V instead of 3.3V
And the AGPVREF reference level on the Mobo & Video pins should be 0.75V, i.e. equal.

There's another tab specifically for overriding Nvidia limiters on VIA and other chipsets.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Curious if the BIOS settings are not set proper. My MSI KT board has some AGP settings including Mode (Auto, 4x, 2x) and AGP Fast Writes which also can be troublesome with certain drivers... just a thought.

Problem solved! Reinstalling the AGP driver from the Via 4-in-1 package did the trick, now the GPU is running in 4x mode. It also enabled AGP fast writes.

The chipset drivers is the first thing I install after the OS setup. Guess something I've installed after those messed them up.

Great so was a driver issue ! Probably the nVidia driver changed the AGP GART from what you first installed to what it has and was wrong ;p
