Does DOSBOX allow a DOS application (written in 1992) to access a dongle on a parallel printer port?

The current machine is running Windows XP. To run the application at the moment I have to maintain an old 486 machine which is now playing up on me.

Second thought. Are there any caveats in installing DOSBOX? Is it safe and reliable or can it cause problems with XP?

2) DOSBox is very safe.
1) I think it would work if you use of the special versions provided by user h-a-l-9000 at http://home.arcor.de/h-a-l-9000/.
