There are a few (rare) cases where the copyright holders of a game or other software have released it into the public domain or at least as freeware and actually termed it "abandonware". It's a confusing term, not very well defined and not really an official designation of anything, especially legally. There's certainly no legal concept of abandonware... the closest thing being the automatic expiry of copyright 50 to 100 years after the author's death, or at a set number of years after publication. We're nowhere near that time yet though.
