I understand that the Wine project is using DosBox for something these days. Does anyone know what for? Are they forking? Are they using all of it?

Just curious.. I'm presuming they will use it for Win9x support, given that they kicked that out of mainstream Wine a few months ago. Or just to have a Dos command prompt in there.

Best wishes,
Oscar

they use it, if you want to run a dos program.

Wait, what? That seems to defeat the purpose of Wine in the first place. Is a new fork starting up?

I see the news in question is here, "Tests no longer attempt to cope with Win9x behavior."

As for DOSBox, it's mentioned here, "- Initial stab at DOSBox integration.", "winevdm: Try to exec dosbox if DOS is not supported natively."

AFAIK, most people use Wine to emulate Win XP on Mac or Linux, so I see why doing their own DOS prompt would be low on the priorities list..

Is win98 support dropped? The only way to play Star Wars Racer in my computer (I've got XP 32 bit) was playing through Debian + Wine...

My interpretation of the above line is that it is not necessarily dropped, but sooner or later changes may be introduced that will start breaking compatibility.

There's probably more discussion of the rationale behind the change buried in a mailing list or discussion board somewhere. Perhaps someone would like to dig it out..?

interesting, as Wine isn't only for games.... which means this forum might end up getting even more "IT specialist" boneheads

You mean there are business apps that will run under Win9x or Wine but not XP?

Sorry to necropost, but I just read that Wine is pushing for some kind of DOSBox integration for 1.4 (http://wiki.winehq.org/WineReleaseCriteria). Apparently they're waiting on some change in the next release of DOSBox - what's that about?
