Robertmo already has an excellent list:
Re: Revised list of Voodoo games for DOS.
Static linked games:
Re: List of 3D accelerated games that make direct hardware calls
His list is already incorporated into mine, but I would like assistance in removing some from my initial post (with proof). robertmo? 😀

Quake never had Glide support. The only accellerated support it had in DOS was the Verite port.

GLQuake had Glide support through 3dfx miniGL IIRC... guess they get moved...

Do the following games exist as Glide (either statically or dynamically linked) games? Also, which ones were retail and which only made it to demo? (And if they didn't ship as Glide, if there is a patch)
* Actua Soccer
* Battlespire: Elder Scrolls
* Burnout: Championship Drag Racing (Player's Choice Edition)
* Carmageddon: Max Pack
* Carmageddon: Splat Pack
* Darklight Conflict
* Descent 2: Destination Quartzon
* Dive: The Conquest of Silver Eye
* Flying Corps
* Flying Corps Gold
* Front Line Fighters: Apache Longbow, F-16 Fighting Falcon, Hind
* Grand Theft Auto (Limited Edition)
* Ignition
* MDK
* NASCAR Grand National Series Expansion Pack
* One Unit Whole Blood
* Prost Grand Prix 1998
* Sentient
* Tie Break Tennis 98
* UEFA Champions League 97 *Static Link?
* VR Soccer '96 (OEM)Thanks for what you can do.
-Both Actua Soccer and VR Soccer had OEM releases for 3DFX, and later patches, but they were static to the 3dfx card.
-Ignition is Glide and runs in Windows.
-Descent 2: DQ - OEM release with the Orchid Righteous (and with other cards as well)
-For Carmageddon the Splat pack is the expansion which added support for 3dfx for the original game, and the Max pack is a bundle the original game + Splat pack.
- UEFA Champions League 97 *Static Link? - I have this game, got 3dfx support. Will check if it's static.
Thank you, please keep it coming guys.

so it's Descent 2 + a glide patch and more/less levels? It might not be 3dfx-ready...
wrote:-For Carmageddon the Splat pack is the expansion which added support for 3dfx for the original game, and the Max pack is a bundle the original game + Splat pack.
So:
Carmageddon Retail: no 3dfx support out-of-box, but patches available
Carmageddon Splat pack Retail: more cars/tracks, plus 3dfx patch for both original game and expansion
Carmageddon Max Pack: all of the above?

Thanks for checking.
You know, a REALLY decent DOS Glide list will probably say if:
- games that don't come with 3dfx support and the patches
- games that ship static linked'
- games that can be patched from static to dynamic (OVL)
- games that ship dynamic OVL
- which ones are only available OEM (but might now have unofficial patches)
Hell, that's also true for Speedy3D/RRedline, S3D, SGL, etc.
We should get to work on that 😁

vetz, maybe you can also help expand/verify this list, I worked mainly off of game patches downloadable from the Internet. (related)

Yes 😀

It has less levels. This version came bundled with S3 cards, 3DFX cards and a joystick. Picture of 3dfx disc here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57506833/descentII_monster3D.jpg . I have this version so I can check it out.

hehe, you can do the Glide list, I'll handle the other API's. They interest me more. Have been planning on doing a really good list with everything included here on Vogons. Something like a mix of my NV1 list and Matrox list.

Re: List of 3D accelerated games that make direct hardware calls
Seems pretty accurate with my knowledge too. UEFA Championship 96/97 could potentially be added and Descent 2 maybe removed.

MiniGL != native glide
I believe 3dfx miniGL wrapped to native Glide, no?
Can you run miniGL games on 3dfx without a glide2x.dll or glide3x.dll or whatever?
[EDIT] gulikoza says: NO, it uses glide.
http://www.si-gamer.net/gulikoza/glide.html
[EDIT2]
Chain would be:
Quake -> miniGL -> Glide (in this case)
other cards are:
Quake -> miniGL -> S3D
Quake -> miniGL -> Speedy3D
Quake -> miniGL -> MSI (by Techland)
Quake -> miniGL -> SGL
or something like that. I suppose not all are wrappers, but the 3dfx one is.
Then cards started getting OpenGL ICDs which spoke to the card natively, and thus that wasn't really necessary.

Mmmm yes, sounds great!

Okay, let me know about UEFA 😀
Descent 2 has two patches:
D2_3dfx (unofficial): dynamic
D2VOODOO (official, but "bad"): static

Claiming an API wrapper to another as native API support is like calling Direct3D games as Glide. Direct3D also goes through similar chain to your graphics driver.
Native glide = GAME.EXE -> glide2x.dll/ovl || glide3x.dll
Native glide != GAME.EXE -> opengl32.dll (in folder) -> glide2x.dll
Native glide != GAME.EXE -> opengl32.dll (in system) -> 3dfxvgl.dll -> glide3x.dll
Native glide != GAME.EXE -> d3dim.dll -> glide2x.dll
Native glide != GAME.EXE -> d3drm.dll -> glide2x.dll
wrote:Okay, let me know about UEFA 😀
The game certainly doesn't like my Orchid Righteous card as it crashes during install, but on my Voodoo 2 with the standard batch "set SST environments" file it runs nicely. No glide.dll or *.ovl files in the folders, just an executable. Guess it's static then?

Sounds like it might be!
If you open the standard executable in a hex-editor like WinHex (or hell, even something like Notepad++ in a pinch) you will _probably_ see a string for the Glide version that it has like in my list 😀

Hex editor says:
Glide Version 2.03h3
Cool! Now that you know how to do it, if you (or someone else) can confirm the retail versions of the games in my list (I just analyzed the patches, one demo, and googled EF2000+TACTCOM+GFX+) I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for all your help so far!

Okay, you are correct (I'd forgotten about the Direct3D dependencies, funny)
Interesting how many Glide wrapper authors test GLQuake/Quake2 anyhow. I guess because it's popular...

* Burnout: Championship Drag Racing (Player's Choice Edition) - Expansion pack to the original game. Has 3DFX logo on the backcover on Mobygames.
* Flying Corps - Direct3D patch
* Flying Corps Gold - Direct3D
* Front Line Fighters: Apache Longbow, F-16 Fighting Falcon, Hind - 3 games bundle!
* Grand Theft Auto (Limited Edition) - Limited edition that included the soundtrack, else it's as retail with 3DFX support.
* MDK - 3DFX patch only works for Windows version.
* NASCAR Grand National Series Expansion Pack - Expansion pack to Nascar Racing II which had a 3dfx patch. Uncertain if that patch works with this expansion.
* One Unit Whole Blood - Bundle of all the Blood expansions. 3DFX patch for original game. Uncertain if that patch works with all expansions.
* UEFA Champions League 97 *Static Link? - See my previous post.
