Good Ol' CHECKSUM Error Any Ideas?

Hi Guys,
My mother in law has an ancient SIS board with a Cyrix CPU and 64 MB of SDRAM (PC100 running at 66 MHz).
She recently told me that about every third time she boots she gets the :
CHECKSUM ERROR
All settings set to Default
Press F1 to continue
My first reaction was given the computer ist over 5 years old and still has a battery is that the battery is dying.
I told her to leave the computer on for a day or two in the hopes it would recharge.
The problem is it has been YEARS since I've seen such an error.
Could it also be a memory problem?
Anything else to check?

Replacing the CMOS battery is usually an easy and unexpensive operation.

Recharchable batteries recharge.
My point was whether it was a CMOS battery problem or not...

cmos batteries are almost never recharchable. anyway a recharchable battery looses it capacity after a long time.

But maybe you could convince the person in question to update the bios ?

Well the computer is at least 5 years old so I am pretty sure the battery is dead.
The BIOS is already the "latest".

well a new battery might fix those errors then
if the data can't be preserved it's only logical that they mess up and that results in checksum errors

Are they standardized? Can I walk into a shop and ask for a "CMOS battery" or is the type of motherboard required?

they're not completely standardized
usualy it's a cr2032

But why not take it out and take it with you to the shop.
