Hello everyone,
I've been collecting old computer parts for quite some time now and finally decided I have accumulated enough boxes worth of $ stuff to start putting together my own custom time machines 😀 I made one PC for each (intel) cpu class. From the 386/486 to the pentium III. I'm posting my results for posterity and because I like to talk about them so any suggestions and comments are ofcourse welcome! Anyway, on with the spiel...
I'll start with the oldest PC in my collection. It is an unknown 386 mainboard with a TI486DLC-40 CPU with copro on it and 4MB of RAM, which I hope to upgrade to 8MB so I can run a few more games on it. For a graphics card I have a Cirrus Logic GD5420 with 512kb. I think a Tseng Labs ET4000 would be my ideal choice here. By chance I recently acquired a GUS clone so I'm using it as the soundcard for this PC now. My dream is to find a Roland LAPC-1 one day though...
I didn't do much work on this PC. It came to me fully working. I just replaced the gfx card, added a sound card and CD-ROM drive and replaced the aging HDD with a 256MB Compact Flash card. I installed DOS 6.33 + WfW 3.11 on it. I was very young when we had a 386 so I don't really use it all that much compared to my other systems, but I do think it is the coolest machine in my collection 😀 .
