Hi,

does anyone have a clue how to get "Road Wars" working on Windows 8.1?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umEz0b2q7tE

I tried the demo as well as the full version and both will not work.

The "d3drm.dll" is required at first. I downloaded some different versions of this file and put it in the game directory. The error message disappears but then the game freezes and the typical "Road Wars has stopped working" message appears.

Of course I tried the compatibility mode which does not solve the problem.

Do you have any further suggestions?

Demo works fine with XP compatibility mode for me (except for damaging my hearing: setting volume to 100% at game start is not cool).

NoGDIHWAcceleration seems to help framerate.

I seem to have Config.exe set to Windows XP (Service Pack 2) compatibility mode, but not the main game exe, however my version is SelectSoft's version, which is quite a recent re-issue.

The older demo is more tricky/crashy I think.

My PC spec: Win10 64bit, i7-4970K (not overclocked), KFA2 GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, Creative Soundblaster ZXr, 16GB RAM, Asus Z97-A motherboard, NZXT 410 case, ROG Swift GSYNC monitor

So I tried the demo on my notebook:

- i3-370M
- Nvidia GeForce GT 420M
- 4GB DDR2

It just worked fine at the first attempt.

However, it still won't work on my PC:

- i5-3570K
- MSI R9 270X Hawk
- 8GB DDR3

Which graphics cards do you have?

nvidia gpu.

Try dgVoodoo2. It won't play the game (severe graphic glitches), but it might tell you if it's gpu related or something else with your setup.

Thanks!

The game works pretty well with dgVoodoo2, except for some minor graphic glitches.

I'm curious, do you have any screenshots of those minor graphic glitches?

It's unplayable with dgVoodoo2 on my Nvidia, but perfect on Intel Integrated
Without it, it looks good natively with Nvidia, no clue about Intel.

So really curious how it looks on an ATI card with dgVoodoo2.
