OK so I have a 386 (actually a 486 Cyrix) @40 MHz which has Caldera DOS 7.02 and 32 Mb RAM and I am trying to play The Settlers. I can play semi-reliably at the start of the game, but when I have a rather large and intricate city, the computer tends to simply reset in the middle of game play, especially after saving (like, 20 seconds after saving it will reset on its own). This is very annoying.
Here is what I have done so far:
-Ran the FPROT virus scan
-Changed the parameters and type of memory manager (QEMM, EMM386, Himem)
-Created many boot disks with various configurations
-Suspected my 540Mb drive was corrupt, installed an 850 Mb from spares with a fresh install of DDO and DR-DOS 7.02
-Replaced the 32 Mb RAM with 8 Mb
It still crashes. Most of the time it will just reboot on its own, but sometimes I get a DOS 4GW dump with some info. Generally though the computer isn't too reliable to begin with but with this game it's just nuts.
Any idea on how to fix this? For the mean time I'm buying a 486 laptop w/8Mb and am going to play the game on that to see how it works over there.
