Would this be a good BeOS system?

I have assembled a basic system for BeOS, and beginning to wonder if some hardware would be under or overkill.
At first, I wanted to use the Dual-CPU board, yet it is defective, as CPU-Slot one are dead.
The system so far....

Asus P2B-S (single CPU and SCSI)
Pentium-II 350mhz.
512mb PC100 Ram.
Intel 740 AGP with Video-IN.
SB-Live.

Any suggestions to other type of hardware. (perhaps I have some in the stash)

If you have a Voodoo3 available, hardware accelerated OpenGL is supported with a set of drivers that were leaked a long time ago, they work great in Quake 2 for example.

Thanks. 😀

Also don't go with more than 512MB or you'll need a custom boot floppy to get the system running.

Yeah... I was thinking of doing something around 256 (512mb top) anyway.
I will probably go for 512 anyway, as I have too many sticks of memory anyway.
And I can not use them all anyway, even if I max all my 7 machines out.
(Anyway. Who am I to complain over a dilemma-deluxe...)

BeOS release 5 or Zeta-Something. The software is just what I can get a hold on.
So this is somewhat an investigation into what hardware to use or not use.

The build will be tested with different operating systems before BeOS.
You know.... Win9X, Win-NT, XP and stuff like that. Just to make shure it is working.

I would suggest to forget about Zeta unless you want to run some of the games that were sold for it (Airline Tycoon deluxe and Robin Hood Legend of Sherwood), that system was prone to crashes from what I recall and seemed a lot slower to use than BeOS (which was one of its strong points to begin with).
Your hardware should be perfectly compatible with BeOS R5 anyway, so you're good.

Thanks. Nice to hear that. The first choice of software for this build is videoediting.
I have never had any rig for this, and I thought that it would be cool in a quirky way, to use BeOS for this.
Everyone is using Windows, and I like to be different.

Edit....
The case for this build is an A-Open HQ45. A nice and heavy case. With a pastel-blue "ribbon" on it.
Perfect for a BeBox-Clone. 🤣

Going to build a beos pc also. I have bought the retail version back in the day. Going to install it onto a piii. I have a p166 that runs on beos. But it's a bit slow.

For video editing, the choice of software is limited, and you'll need a capture card with the Bt8x8 chipset for composite/s-video input or a BeOS-compatible Firewire card for DV.

Here's a screenshot of the v2 working under Windows, same UI:

Mediapede UltraDV may have been released but it's impossible to find:

Last but not least, the Roland DV7 editing software can work if you have the correct video hardware to run it...

I seem to remember ordering my Matrox G400 back in the day to play with OpenGL on Be. I think I still have my Be t-shirt somewhere 😀 Wish I had an original BeBox

Is there anything worth running on it? I was extremely underwhelmed when I ran 4.5 Pro and 5, coming from OS/2. The video codecs weren't as good, printing non existent, and network stack sub par. I tried it for a bit, but never really found it worthwhile.

Os/2 ? Hmmm..... Maby this should be an Os/2-Box instead...
I have the original Warp 3.0 in Danish somewhere, so it would actually spare me from searching for a BeOS-5-Pro installation.

As always it depends on what kind of software you want to run, video, audio, office suite, drawing, games?

Finding it is easy, and you can always use the personal edition in case nobody helps you track down an BeOS 5 disc or .iso image.

Yeah. I know that there are plenty of pirated iso's out there. I just don't want to do it.
Besides, that I don't know how to burn any of those correctly. So eighter buy an original or I just avoid BeOS.
I will be looking for a cheap original none the less.

Anything that isn't too niche and offers advantages over existing software. Games are also good, obviously!
