I am having trouble playing Dungeon Keeper 1 on my monitor. When I click to start the game, it will show the splash image but when it changes to the next screen my monitor doesn't support the resolution and says "out of range". I am using a newer 1080p ASUS monitor. I tried editing the target in the shortcut on my desktop using:

C:\Games\Keeper\Keeper95.exe -w
and
C:\Games\Keeper\Keeper95.exe -r:800x600

but those did not work. Is there any way I can fix this without switching monitors? I'm using win98se.

Sorry for this being a bit vague but it's been a long time since I had to do this. When I had similar issues in the past it always required some registry editing. What I suspect is happening is that the profile for 800x600 has a stored refresh rate that your monitor does not support- for example maybe its trying to switch to 800x600 59hz while your monitor only supports 60hz. You need to modify the registry so that everytime it tries to switch to 800x600 that is uses 60hz (example). There should be a ton of profiles, I think there is one for every resolution and color depth- so you might have to change 800x600 @ 8bit / 16bit / 32bit.

There might be a utility which could simply this for you, I recall PowerStrip having some Custom Resolution functionality.

Not that it would help but I'm curious how your monitor is setup in WIn98se, Generic SVGA?

Check out DOSBox Distro:

a lightweight Linux distro (tinycore) which boots off a usb flash drive and goes straight to DOSBox.

If I remember correctly, after the splash screen the intro video starts. It's low res video and perhaps will change the output resolution accordingly, so that would mean you will only get "out of range" when videos are playing. Pressing Escape or Enter (going to the menu) doesn't help?

Pressing enter skips the cutscene and I am able to see the main menu. When I click to start a game though it goes back out of range. At that point it's no longer a cutscene because I can randomly click and hear sounds from the game.

I will look into registry editing and post back what happens. Thank you guys for the ideas. Oh and I am using an svga connection.
