Get freedos and put it inside dosbox. It has a modernish edit command plus many other useful programs.

Dosbox has its own DOS implementation. You could get hold of a copy of MS DOS and use its qbasic.exe and edit.com (the latter uses the former). Or download one of the many freeware DOS editor programs and use that.

Thanks for the fastest answers ever. + for you
What I recommend is to "simulate" the hard drive layout of a real DOS PC - copy DOS 6.22 files (easy to find online) to C:\DOS and include it in the PATH variable. Not all of these files will be usable (some may complain you're running the wrong DOS version) but you'll get a more authentic experience and will have all the extra apps for DOS.
I also recommend DOSSHELL which is not a standard part of DOS 6.22 but it's a very good Explorer-type program for DOS.
Retro game fanatic.

"ver set 6 22" is your friend.
I use VDE (a WordStar derivative) under DOSBox. It works fine.. I downloaded it from:
